The first Dakar stage in Saudi Arabia will be a day to forget for Joan Barreda, Andrew Short and factory Yamaha riders Adrien Van Beveren and Xavier de Soultrait. All these contenders for the overall podium have lost a whopping 8 to 10 minutes on the road to Al Wajh!
Toby Price has started the 2020 Dakar just like he ended the 2019 edition, with a stage win. The reigning champion sends a clear message to his rivals with a brilliant show of force and will be the first leader of the rally ahead of Ricky Brabec!
Toby Price looks on course to take the stage win in the bag after opening up a small gap to Ricky Brabec at km 254. The 2019 champion now has a margin of 1′41″, while Matthias Walkner is still in the top 3 at 2′26″ and Sam Sunderland appears to be running out of steam at 4′28″. Meanwhile, Adrien Van Beveren seems to be taking it a little bit too easy at 8 minutes back!
After failing to finish the previous two editions, Adrien Van Beveren is acutely aware that the Dakar will not be decided on the first day. The Frenchman is tackling the opening stage with caution and trailing Toby Price by 5′40″.
