Eduard Nikolaev has started the Dakar 2019 in similar vein as when finished the 2018 edition, like a champion. The Kamaz driver was victorious in Pisco by just 18 petites seconds over rising star Ton van Genugten, whilst his main rival from last year, Federico Villagra, showed that he will not be giving up easily with the third place on the day.
The truck category has witnessed its first bit of drama: Gerard de Rooy, on his comeback to the rally after a one-year absence and currently second at the half-way stage, is currently driving with a wheel on fire. It is difficult to see him reaching the finishing line in such conditions, even if the Dutchman isn’t far from his goal!
The SxS category has witnessed the arrival of many fiercely ambitious newcomers such as que Chaleco Lopez, Gerard Farrès, Ignacio Casale or also Casey Currie. However, at the end of the first stage, they were all beaten by the winner 2018, Reinaldo Varela, who made a point of showing that he is boss in the category. The Brazilian has taken command of the general standings and it will not be easy to dislodge him.
Eduard Nikolaev continues to lead at WP2. For the moment, the Kamaz driver leads Gerard de Rooy, who is making a comeback to the rally and showing that he has not lost any of his talent!
