22:17 Cars: Peterhansel saves his strength in the general
With a lead that is still 44’38' over Giniel de Villiers, Stéphane Peterhansel controlled his race today, not doing anything too flashy, to ensure victory tomorrow in Santiago. For third place, there has been a swap in positions between Léonid Novitskiy and Nani Roma. The Spaniard waited for his team leader on the special and exits the virtual podium as a result. Orlando Terranova makes it a fourth X-Raid vehicle in the top 5 for a potentially triumphant finish in Santiago, ahead of the Great Wall driven by Carlos Sousa in sixth place.
22:03 Cars: Gordon wins!
Robby Gordon has been confirmed as state winner, 22' ahead of Guerlain Chicherit. The two men dominated the stage, because their nearest pursuer is 4’41' behind, namely the BMW X3 driven by Orlando Terranova, with the Toyota of Giniel de Villiers 8’08' behind the American. Leonid Novivtskiy is fifth, 8’35' behind Gordon, whilst Stéphane Peterhansel finished sixth, 13’51' behind the stage winner.
21:35 Cars: Could Chicherit beat Gordon?
The Frenchman is flat out on the attack this afternoon: he has just achieved the joint best time alongside the Hummer driven by Robby Gordon at CP5, locate at the 417 km point on the special, just 23 km from the finishing line.
21:32 Cars: Gordon finishes in front of Terranova
Three cars have now finished the special. The provisional results put Robby Gordon in first place with alead of 4’41' over Orlando Terranova and 8’08' over Giniel de Villiers. However, given the state of these gaps, the next finishers have a chance of changing these as yet unconfirmed results.
21:12 Cars: Gordon first to finish
The American’s Hummer was the first car to cross the finishing line with a total time of 4:50’53'. His pursuers have not yet finished.
21:10 Cars: Gordon consolidates his lead
After 359 km, the American still leads, ahead of Guerlain Chicherit, Orlando Terranova, Leonid Novitskiy, Giniel de Villiers and Carlos Sousa. Stephane Peterhansel is 9th and has lost almost 6 minutes to the leader.
20:29 Cars: The cars start section 2
Robby Gordon was the first to resume battle after a 61-km neutralised zone at 3.50 PM local time.
19:16 Cars: Gordon leads the dance at the end of section 1
American driver Robby Gordon has finished the first section of the special in the lead, in front of Orlando Terranova by 1’38' and Giniel de Villiers by 4’52'. Carlos Sousa is putting in a good performance with provisional fourth place, 5’35' off the lead, in front of a Stéphane Peterhansel who is comfortably protecting his general standings lead, 5’42' behind Gordon. The big loser on this first section has been Spaniard Nani Roma, who opened the road and has so far lost 15’11' to the provisional stage leader over the first 246 kilometres.
18:46 Cars: Solid lead for Gordon after 215 km
American Hummer driver Robby Gordon is out in front on the car special, leading the BMW X3 of Orlando Terranova by 2’34', Giniel de Villiers in third by 5’26' and Stéphane Peterhansel in fourth by 6’38'.
17:57 Cars: Biasion third ahead of Loprais and Versluis at CP1
No change for the first two places, but Miki Biasion has moved into third, 12' behind his team leader. He is followed by (23' off the lead), Versluis (29' behind De Rooy) and Van Vliet (1’13' behind the current stage leader). Ayrat Mardeev is currently in seventh position.
17:50 Cars: Advantage to Gordon at CP2
American Robby Gordon now leads the car special, after 153 km, 1’26' ahead of Orlando Terranova. 2’45' behind Gordon, Giniel de Villiers occupies third place. Stéphane Peterhansel is fourth, 5’24' off the lead, three seconds in front of Lucio Alvarez.
17:32 Cars: Roma drops back at CP1
Timed at few minutes behind Stéphane Peterhansel, but 3’57' behind stage leader Orlando Terranova, Nani Roma is now in ninth place. Behind Peterhansel, Carlos Sousa trails Terranova by 1’12'. Leonid Novitskiy is 1’40' off the lead and Lucio Alvarez is 2’30' behind the current stage leader, tied on the same time as Ronan Chabot.
17:14 Cars: Terranova first to lead at CP1
After 69 km, at the first check point, the Argentinean BMW X3 driver leads Robby Gordon’s Hummer by 43', the Toyota Hilux driven by Giniel de Villiers by 59' and Stéphane Peterhansel’s Mini by 1’03'. The general standings leader is followed for the moment by team-mate Nani Roma, who trails the current stage leader by 3’57'.
16:25 Cars: The car race leaders start the special
At 12.06 PM local time, the Mini driven by Nani Roma started the day’s special, followed by Robby Gordon’s Hummer and the Toyota of Giniel de Villiers.
13:30 Cars: After thirtieth place in the car category…
Ignacio Casale is 56th in the car general standings or 2nd in the quad category Both are actually true: Ignacio the quad rider is the nephew of Ignacio the driver and Francisco, another uncle, is driving a second Toyota Tundra, a vehicle which stands out due to running on gas and petrol. Reaching Santiago tomorrow using an alternative fuel will be a major source of pride for the family.
13:23 Cars: Behind the leaders in the car category (cont.)
Today will be a matter of seconds between the SMG buggy driven by Bernard Errandonea and the Proto Nissan Juke driven by Christian Lavieille. 37 seconds separate their 18th and 19th places, which is almost nothing after more than 7,000 km of racing. This is the smallest gap this morning in the car category.
13:20 Cars: Behind the leaders in the car category
The unity displayed by the SMG buggies yesterday behind sixth place Carlos Sousa has fallen apart: Bernard Errandonea lost out the most (68th on the stage) in the dunes around Copiapo. As a result, he tumbles to 18th place, far behind his team-mates Ronan Chabot (7th) and Guerlain Chicherit (now 8th after transmission problems yesterday). Pascal Thomasse in his MD Rallye buggy therefore obtains a place in the top 10 (9th) ahead of Geoff Olholm and his Toyota Hilux.
13:13 Cars: Roma on the road
Spaniard Nani Roma, who scored a fine victory on yesterday’s stage in his Mini ahead of Robby Gordon’s Hummer, was the first to leave the bivouac this morning at 10.01 AM local time, heading towards the start of the special. 93 cars have been authorised to start this morning.
21:21 Bikes: Desprès under surveillance in the general standings
With a lead of 8’15' over Francisco Lopez, Cyril Despres is not a comfortable leader. All number of things could still happen tomorrow, even if we know that the Frenchman is capable of handling the situation. 14’41' behind his team leader, Ruben Faria is in third, ahead of Ivan Jakes, 24’45' behind Despres, and Juan Pedrero Garcia, 43’31' behind the Frenchman. Olivier Pain occupies sixth place, 1:08’14' behind his countryman, and is under threat from Hélder Rodrigues, 1:14’56' behind the general standings leader.
19:48 Bikes: Duclos resumes the special
The French biker has stopped several times, building up a significant amount of time lost. At present, he has reached the 358-km point.
19:39 Bikes: Top 5 complete at the finish
5’25' behind today’s winner Francisco Lopez, Cyril Despres has finished second. Paulo Gonçalves occupies third place, 5’29' behind Chaleco, followed by Juan Pedrero Garcia, 7’42' behind the Chilean, and Joan Barreda, 8’24' behind the stage winner. Olivier Pain, who was in a close fight for sixth place in the general standings with Frans Verhoeven, maintains his advantage seeing as he finished 8th almost 17 minutes ahead of the Dutchman.
19:07 Bikes: Despres still rally leader at the finish, but…
The Frenchman has finished this special 5’25' behind man of the day, Chilean Francisco 'Chaleco' Lopez. The two men are now within touching distance in the general standings: the gap between Despres and Lopez has been cut down to 8’15'.
18:59 Bikes: Chaleco eyes the lead at section 2 finish
Francisco Lopez was the first rider to cross the finishing line with a time of 3:44’54'. He was followed by Joan Barreda, 8’24' behind, Helder Rodrgigues, 9’37' behind the Chilean, and most importantly Ruben Faria, 14’27' behind the provisional stage winner. Lopez should therefore take over second place in the general standings with a lead of 6’26' over Faria. However, some of the leading riders are still out on the special, in particular Cyril Despres. When they arrive, there will be a clearer picture of the stage’s results.
18:41 Bikes: Duclos breaks down?
The French Sherco rider has been at a standstill, just before the 341-km point, for almost one hour. The bike and rider are just off to the side of the tracks in an earthy zone.
18:37 Bikes: Caselli in trouble
The leader of the bike special, American Kurt Caselli, has ground to a halt after 396 km, apparently due to engine problems.
18:28 Bikes: Despres responds to Chaleco
2’40' behind leader Kurt Caselli, Cyril Despres is third, 1’19' behind Francisco Lopez, his main rival in the general standings. If the positions stay the same, this evening the two men will be in the same order in the general standings, with an advantage of slightly over 12 minutes for the Frenchman.
18:08 Bikes: Chaleco threatening Despres
The trend was emerging at previous time checks and is becoming all the more evident as the bikes reach the 359-km point: Francisco Lopez, who currently occupies the best place, has regained more than 11 minutes on Ruben Faria and should therefore be in second place, on the coat tails of Cyril Despres, in the general standings this evening.
17:45 Bikes: Start of the second section
The first bikers have set off on the second section of the special at 1.22 PM local time, led by Hélder Rodrigues.
16:40 Bikes: Caselli leads at the neutralised zone
The American is in the lead at the end of the first portion of the special, with a lead of 19 seconds over Cyril Despres and 42' over the third placed rider, Chilean Francisco Lopez. Behind the trio, Juan Pedrero Garcia occupies fourth place, 1’49' off the lead, followed by Paulo Gonçalves in fifth, 2’17' off the lead, Hélder Rodrigues in sixth, 2’34' of the lead, and Ivan Jakes in seventh, 4’27' behind the current stage leader.
16:31 Bikes: Caselli leads at CP4
Whilst the first riders to set out today are arriving at the neutralised zone, Kurt Caselli has reached CP4 in the lead, 11 seconds ahead of Cyril Despres.
16:27 Bikes: Chaleco on the attack at CP4
After 215 km, there is only a one second gap between Cyril Despres and Francisco Lopez, currently in first and second on the day’s special, though Kurt Caselli has not yet reached the time check point…
16:19 Bikes: Caselli drops back slightly after 190 km
The gap between specials stage leader Cyril Despres and second placed Kurt Caselli is 1’37' now that the American has reached the time check point. Fourth placed Juan Pedrero Garcia trails Despres by 2’17', ahead of Olivier Pain, 2’57' off the lead, Paulo Gonçalves, 3’06' off the lead, and Ivan Jakes, 3’12' behind the leader.
15:57 Bikes: Despres raises the pace after 190 km
For the second time, Cyril Despres leads the special stage. The Frenchman took command after 163 km, ahead of American Kurt Caselli by a handful of seconds. Third place is occupied by his main rival in the general standings, Francisco Lopez; 2’09' behind.
15:25 Bikes: Despres in cruise control at CP2
Riding with Ivan Jakes and Juan Pedrero Garcia, Cyril Despres is holding back a little after 153 km, where he occupies sixth place, 2’13' behind Joan Barreda. Ruben Faria lies 1’17' behind the stage leader, Francisco Lopez trails Barreda by 1’30', whilst Frans Verhoeven and Kurt Caselli are both 1’31' behind the Spaniard, in joint fourth position.
15:09 Bikes: Still Barreda at CP2
After 153 km, the Spaniard, also recorded in the lead after 123 km, is again out in front at CP2, with a lead of 1’17' over Ruben Faria and 1’32' over Frans Verhoeven. Of course, the arrival of other competitors, in particular Cyril Despres, will give a clearer picture of the race order.
14:43 Bikes: Despres second at CP1, Rogrigues leads the chase
Cyril Despres has just sneaked into the top 3 with the same time as his team-mate Ruben Faria, 15 seconds behind stage leader Joan Barreda. In fifth place, Olivier Pain is 45' off the lead, Hélder Rodrigues is sixth, 1’04' off the lead, Kuba Przygonski is seventh, 1’10' off the lead and Francisco Lopez trails the stage leader by 1’16'.
14:22 Bikes: Barreda leads at CP1
After 69 km, the Spaniard has taken the lead at the first check point with a time of 38’12', leading Portugal’s Ruben Faria by 15” and Dutchman Frans Verhoeven by 21”. Only these three bikes have reached this point so far.
14:06 Bikes: Verhoeven starts the special
At 9.30 AM local time, Frans Verhoeven set the stopwatch ticking at the start of the 441-km long special stage, including a 61-km long neutralised zone (after 246 km). The second 134-km portion concludes the day’s stage.
13:07 Bikes: Further down the bike general standings?
Very, very far behind the official KTM riders, Peruvian Bruno Chichiloza is in last place in the general standings, trailing the leader by 36:48’46'. A native of Arequipa, he has achieved the first of his goals: to complete his ‘home’ stage (on day four of the rally), to say hello to his family and friends. His second is to reach Santiago and finish his first attempt at the Dakar, which will be in the bag if he can make it until after tomorrow. For someone who started endurance racing at the age of 14, it’s a real boyhood dream.
13:02 Bikes: Behind the leaders in the bike category (cont.)
Where are the smallest gaps in the bike general standings after more than 7,000 kilometres of the Dakar? This morning, Joan Barreda occupies twentieth place in the general standings, 11 seconds behind Frenchman Michael Metge and his Yamaha, who again moved up a place yesterday and now finds himself in the top 20. After his very fine performance on the Fiambala-Copiapo stage, Alain Duclos is now knocking on the door of the top 20. The gap is also very small in the fight for 22nd place between Felipe Prohens and Pablo Rodriguez. The two Honda riders are only separated by 12 seconds!
12:39 Bikes: Behind the leaders in the bike category
The navigational errors made yesterday will perhaps have a big impact on the rally of Italian Alessandro Botturi who dropped from 7th to 12th place in the general standings yesterday evening, behind Paulo Gonçalvez. Further than an hour and a half behind Cyril Despres, the two men, accompanied by Chilean Daniel Gouet (1:35’58' off the lead) and South African Riian Van Niekerk (1:41’44' off the lead), form a small group that is still capable of taking tenth place from Kuba Przygonski. A little more than just 10 minutes separates them.
12:34 Bikes: Verhoeven on ‘Ruta 5’
The Dutchman who won yesterday’s stage set off along the Ruta 5 highway at 8.00 AM local time on the 90-km link stage leading to the start of the day’s special. 127 bikes have been authorised to start.
22:07 Quads: Patronelli at complete ease in the general standings
The day before the finish in Santiago in Chile, Marcos Patronelli can afford to sit back and take it easy. Ignacio Casale lies 1:50’24' behind the incontestable leader of the category. 3:14’43' behind the younger Patronelli brother, in third place Rafal Sonik is ahead of Lucas Bonetto (3:39’55' off the lead), Sebastian Palma (4:27’48' off the lead) and Sebastian Husseini (5:40’44' behind the general standings leader).
20:33 Quads: Van Biljon wins!
Coming back from provisional third place over the last 50 kilometres, Sarel van Biljon has snatched the stage victory at the death in the quad category, 43' ahead of Sebastian Husseini. The Emirati rider himself took 2nd place by only 7 seconds over Ignacio Casale, after an intense battle between the two quad riders. Lucas Bonetto finishes fourth, 41' behind Van Biljon, and Marcos Patronelli finishes fifth, 2’18' behind the stage winner.
20:02 Quads: Casale and Husseini still battling after 417 km
Only 13 seconds separate the first placed rider, Chilean Ignacio Casale (Yamaha) from the second placed quad of Sebastian Husseini (Honda). Sarel Van Biljon (E-ATV) is still third, 18' off the lead, Lucas Bonetto (Honda) has moved up to fourth, 1’39' behind Casale, in front of Marcos Patronelli (Yamaha) who trails the provisional stage leader by 2’07'.
19:43 Quads: Casale catches Husseini after 359 km
Young Chilean Ignacio Casale now leads Sebastian Husseini by 54', South Africain Sarel Van Biljon by 1’44' and general standings leader Marcos Patronelli by 2’03'. Lucas Bonetto, who started the special in the lead, has dropped back, 2’34' behind the provisionals stage leader.

16:23 Quads: Van Biljon leads Bonetto at CP2
After 153 km, South African Sarel Van Biljon still leads Argentinean Lucas Bonetto (but only by 8') and Chilean Ignacio Casale (by 49'). Sebastian Husseini is fourth, trailing the leader by 1’15', followed by Rafal Sonik, 2’04' off the lead, and Marcos Patronelli, 2’51' behind the stage leader.
15:38 Quads: Bonetto and Van Biljon in front at CP1
Confirming observations made several kilometres after the start, Argentinean Lucas Bonetto and South African Sarel Van Biljon have climbed into the first two places after the first 69 km of the stage. There is a gap of only 7 seconds between the two men and one of 30 seconds between the leader and Ignacio Casale, currently in third.
15:12 Quads: Casale provisionally leads at CP1
Chilean Ignacio Casale, no doubt inspired by the air of his homeland, has been the quickest over the first 69 kilometres, 18 seconds ahead of Sebastian Husseini and 1’30' in front of Argentinean Marcos Patronelli. However, a clearer picture of the race order can only be given with the arrival of Lucas Bonetto and Sarel Van Biljon, who led after 45 km.
14:19 Quads: Husseini starts the special
The Emirati-based Dutch rider Sebastian Husseini started the special at 10.11 AM local time. The quad race is starting as the bikes are reaching the 69-km mark on the stage.

22:38 Trucks: Kamaz set for a hat-trick in the general standings?
As if in formation, the Kamaz drivers Eduard Nikolaev, Andrey Karginov (36’24' behind his team leader) and Ayrat Mardeev (40’27' behind Karginov), have reigned supreme over the last few stages. All that remains is to see whether fourth-placed Gerard De Rooy will be able to throw a spanner in the Russians’ works. A possible place on the podium, 4’30', is within his reach. At 1:h19’47' behind the general standings leader, the first Tatra truck driven by Ales Loprais is fifth.
22:29 Trucks: Karginov wins the day!
Kamaz driver Andrey Karginov has completed the day’s special in 5:16’30, ahead of the Iveco Petronas team leader, Gerad De Rooy, 2’48' behind. Ales Loprais is third and the first Tatra driver, 8’04' behind the Russian, but ahead of Italian Miki Biasion, himself 10’57' behind Karginov. General standings leader Eduard Nikolaev rounds off the Top 5, 14’02' behind his team-mate and stage winner.
22:10 Trucks: Karginov in charge at CP5
At the 417-km point, after having been led by Gerard De Rooy, Andrey Karginov seems to have taken charge of the truck special with a lead of 2’20'. Third placed Ales Loprais trails the Russian by 7’28', ahead of Italian Miki Biasion who is 9’55' behind the stage leader.
20:27 Trucks: Loprais and Biasion behind Karginov

19:46 Trucks: Advantage to De Rooy at the end of section 1
The Iveco driven by Gérard De Rooy has finished the first part of the day’s special in the lead, 18 seconds ahead of Andrey Karginov’s Kamaz. For the moment, only these two competitors have finished the first section.
19:01 Trucks: Mardeev and Nikolaev held up
The two Kamaz were stopped side by side before resuming the special at the 190-km point, perhaps due to one of the crews getting stuck in the sand.
18:34 Trucks: Karginov leads De Rooy at CP2
The Kamaz of Andrey Karginov is now in front on the truck special stage, with a lead of 45” over Gerard De Rooy and 1’30” over Italian Miki Biasion. Ales Loprais is fourth, 2’01' behind the Russian, followed by Pieter Versluis, 2’24' off the lead, Ayrat Mardeev, 2’41' behind Karginov, and general standings leader Eduard Nikolaev, 3’10' behind the stage leader.
