18:09 Cars: Leaders stopped in the car special
Even though they have passed CP1, the point at which the car/truck special has been called to a halt, the leaders of the car special have been stopped by the race organisers on the last section of the route, namely, Robby Gordon, Stéphane Peterhansel, Nani Roma and Giniel de Villiers.
17:26 : Car/truck race stopped at CP1
The weather conditions have deteriorated further than forecast and the dry river beds that cross the route today are in a state of torrential flood. The rally organisers have decided to stop the special for the cars and trucks. We await further news on the matter.
17:12 Cars: Chabot leads Gordon
The buggies and similar vehicles are at ease over the first kilometres of the special. With his SMG buggy, Ronan Chabot has taken the lead from Robby Gordon and leads the American by more than a minute. Bernard Errandonea has made an appearance in sixth place, 2’19' behind his team-mate. A noteworthy arrival in the provisional top ten is Eric Vigouroux in eighth place, 2’44' behind the stage leader.
16:53 Cars: Gordon in command after 51 km
American Robby Gordon is in first place after the first quarter of the special, 59' ahead of Lucio Alvarez. 1’46' behind the leader, Giniel de Villiers is in third, with Stéphane Peterhansel fourth, 3’24” behind Gordon. Nani Roma is fifth and Orlando Terranova is sixth, respectively 3’39' and 4’44' behind the stage leader.
16:04 Cars: Start of the special for the cars
Orlando Terranova took starter’s orders at 11.53 AM local time for this 190-km long special in which the cars and trucks will be taking a slightly different route to the bikes and quads.
12:45 Cars: After 30th place in the car general standings…
Yves Tartarin has been combining his enthusiasm for the Dakar since 1988 with, by and large, a smile but always unswerving loyalty. He is 32nd this morning with his BMW X6. This enthusiasm is also shown by William Alcaraz who has already raced the rally in almost every way possible. This year, he is going solo, because he is having to fight a lone battle on board his Polaris buggy. Nonetheless, he is leading the T3 category, ahead of Nicolas Duclos and Sébastien Delaunay, also in a Polaris, as well as Chilean Francisco Lopez Balart in a Can-Am Commander 1000 X… A category for small cars but big on courage…
12:39 Cars: Behind the leaders in the car general standings (cont.)
Behind the wheel of his Chevrolet Pick-up, Eric Vigouroux is 25th and running well on his return to the Dakar. He leads the Opel Mokka driven by Hungarian Balazs Szalay, who is by no means unknown after his second place on the Silk Way Rally, behind Boris Gadasin. A little further back in thirtieth place, watchful eyes will be on the Mitsubishi of Vadym Nesterchuk in the stages requiring navigation, for a good reason: his co-pilot is the former navigator of Ayrat Mardeev, current third placed driver in the truck category.
12:34 Cars: Behind the leaders in the car general standings
A small group of buggies are holding out against the 4x4s from seventh to tenth place, led by Guerlain Chicherit ahead of Bernard Errandonea and Ronan Chabot for SMG as well as Pascal Thomasse for MD Rallye. Perhaps the surprises in the dunes will come from this group. We spoke yesterday about Alvarez, Vassiliev and Gadasin. These three men again put in a good performance yesterday and are still among the first 15. However, after today’s route, they may not be so high in the general standings.
12:30 Cars: The cars are on their way
Orlando Terranova has set off from the bivouac towards the small town of Fiambala where the start of the special will take place for the 96 cars authorised to start this morning, with the first getting down to business at 11.53 AM local time.
19:15 Bikes: Despres strengthens his lead in the general standings
Cyril Despres now leads the Dakar 2013 by 13’16' from his team-mate Ruben Faria. 18’08' behind the leader, Francisco 'Chaleco' Lopez still holds on to third place. Ivan Jakes did not have a particularly impressive day, losing 5 minutes extra to trail Despres by 23’33'. Alessandro Botturi, 29’32' behind the Frenchman, occupies fifth place in front of Juan Pedrero Garcia, 44’12' behind the race leader. Frenchman Olivier Pain in seventh is the first biker more than an hour behind Despres; 1:07’12' to be precise.
17:26 : Car/truck race stopped at CP1
The weather conditions have deteriorated further than forecast and the dry river beds that cross the route today are in a state of torrential flood. The rally organisers have decided to stop the special for the cars and trucks. We await further news on the matter.
17:04 Bikes: Caselli wins the special
Behind the American who finished several minutes ago, Paulo Gonçalves has taken advantage of the problems encountered by his countryman Hélder Rodrigues, finishing 4’45' behind the winner. Cyril Despres has finished in third place, 6’24' behind Caselli, Juan Pedrero Garcia in fourth, 10’18' behind the American, but 32 seconds ahead of Francisco Lopez. Alessandro Botturi finishes in seventh, 11’31' behind the stage winner.
17:00 Bikes: Rodrigues in difficulty!
Second at the intermediate time checks since the beginning of the special, Hélder Rodrigues has stopped after 198 km. He is set to lose second place, due to mechanical problems.
16:56 Bikes: Caselli looks set to win
Unless Hélder Rodrigues completes the last section in record time, American Kurt Caselli should win his second special on the Dakar. For the moment, only three competitors have crossed the finishing line, namely Gonçalves, Despres and Barreda. Watch this space…
16:06 Bikes: Rodrigues in 2nd
Hélder Rodrigues has just achieved the second best time so far, 1'15' behind Kurt Caselli. Francisco Lopez is third, 2’06” behind the American. As for Alessandro Botturi, he occupies 7th place, 7’28' behind the stage leader.
16:02 Bikes: Caselli leading and opening the way after 174 km
Not content with being the quickest on the special, the American has also taken over the position of opening the way for the pack of bikes, ahead of Cyril Despres and Joan Barreda. The positions on the tracks only partially reflect the stage positions, however, because whilst Kurt Caselli is indeed the quickest leading Juan Pedrero Garcia by 4’01' and Paulo Gonçalves by 5’16', Cyril Despres trails him by a little more than 7 minutes and Joan Barreda is 14’20 behind the American. Hélder Rodrigues, Francisco Lopez and Alessandro Botturi have not yet reached this point, so these positions may change soon.
15:35 Bikes: Stuck in the sand
Hans-Jos Liefhebber, No. 48, is stuck in the small section where many of the riders got lost at the beginning of the special. The Dutchman has been at a standstill for 40 minutes following technical problems. British rider James West is also halted in this zone after a fall that has led to a fuel leak on his bike. The situation is the same for quad rider Tomas Maffei who is suffering from the same problem on the tank of his machine. A little further on, the Peruvians Bruno Chichiloza and Jacques Baron have also stopped together for an impromptu repair session.

15:17 Bikes: Mechanical problems for Farres Guell
For the last hour, Spanish rider Gerard Farres Guell has been at a standstill after 47 km to repair a mechanical problem on his Honda.
15:14 Bikes: Caselli takes charge after 120 km
The American is in top form today and has come through the main portion of dunes in front, with a lead of 18” over Hélder Rodrigues, 2’17” over Juan Pedrero Garcia, 4’05” over Paulo Gonçalves, 4’32” over Alessandro Botturi and 5’36” over Cyril Despres.
14:37 Bikes: Caselli finds his way behind Rodrigues
After 83 km, American Kurt Caselli is currently the quickest rider on the special behind Hélder Rodrigues, who he trails by 1’41'. 2’58' behind the stage leader lies his countryman Paulo Gonçalves in third, ahead of Spaniard Juan Pedrero Garcia, 3’12' behind first place, Italian Alesandro Botturi, 4’05' behind Rodrigues, and Cyril Despres, 4’51' behind the provisional leader. Opening the way has not been an easy exercise for Joan Barreda who has lost 6 minutes so far.
14:16 Bikes: Wrong way
Ivan Jakes little detour left a trace and plenty of other riders have made the same mistake at the same place behind him. Indeed, at this specific point, Slovakian Stefan Svitko has been at a standstill for several minutes and seems to have technical problems.
14:13 Bikes: Rodrigues navigating well
After 51 kilometres of the special, one quarter of the way through, Hélder Rodrigues is the quickest with a lead of 1’30' over Francisco Lopez, 2’47' over Paulo Gonçalves, 2’59' over Kurt Caselli, 3’07' over Cyril Despres and 3’19' over Juan Pedrero Garcia.
13:46 Bikes: Jakes makles a detour
There will be navigation on this stage and the first to come unstuck is Slovakian Ivan Jakes who headed east after 33 km, 5 km too early in relation to the road-book. Fortunately, he realised his mistake and altered his course to return to the right direction.
13:39 Bikes: Start of the bike special
'First bike, No. 5, started on time' is the radio message that has just signalled the entry of Joan Barreda into the timed section, shortened by 30 kilometres. As result, today the special will be 191-km long. An important piece of news is that it is raining on part of the route.
12:28 Bikes: After 30th place in the bike general standings…
Tim Forman is British and this is his debut on the Dakar. He is not doing too badly at all, seeing as he is still in the hunt to tackle the dunes in Fiambala. In 32nd place, he is close on the tail of Australian Warren Strange and one of his countrymen: Stanley Watt. However, he is dangerously exposed to those pursuing him: Peruvian Felipe Rios is only 1 minute behind and Frenchman Alain Duclos, who is 7 minutes behind, must be have a terrible thirst for some sort of success, heightened by the frustrations he has suffered over the last few days. This must also be the case for Kurt Caselli, in 36th place, ahead of Frenchman Romain Souvignet who occupies a respectable place in the top 40 before one of the final determining points on the Dakar 2013.
12:19 Bikes: Behind the leaders in the bike general standings (cont.)
25th before the rest day, 23rd the day before yesterday, 20th this morning Michael Metge is continuing to make progress and at this pace, the Frenchman could lay a claim to a top 15 place in Santiago. This is also the goal of Dutchman Henk Knuiman, a former water carrier for Marc Coma, who has completed his previous eight participations on the Dakar in the top 20. This morning he is 22nd. It is a different story for Argentinean Pablo Rodrigues, 72nd last year, who started out with the objective of doing better in 2013. 'Cacha' is 26th just ahead of Joan Barreda and the Brazilian Jean de Azevedo who is taking part in his 14th Dakar, having returned to two wheels after several races in a car. The Dakar car category was also the aim for Britain’s Stanley Watt, who had hoped to be a co-pilot this year. In the end, he is behind the handlebars of a KTM which he has ridden into 30th place so far.
12:13 Bikes: Behind the leaders in the bike general standings
The first ten riders are still grouped within a 45 minute bracket, but the others are not too far off either, including certain “fallen angels” of the 2013 edition. Unfortunately, we have not seen much of Pal Anders Ullevalseter. He was seen in the top 5 during the third stage, but due to all the problems he has encountered this year, he has not been able to do any better. Like him, many other talented riders have also experienced misfortunes in the sand, from Javier Pozzolito, 11th, to Paulo Gonçalves, 17th, including Frans Verhoeven, 13th. They all enjoyed a good start to the rally, or have put in a good performance here and there, but have not been able to reach the summit.
12:07 Bikes: Destination: Fiambala
Joan Barreda and Cyril Despres are heading towards the star of the special, which was shortened by 30 kilometres, yesterday evening, for all the categories. The 133 bikes expected at the start this morning will have to travel just over 256 kilometres on the link stage before getting to grips with the dunes.
19:22 Quads: No stress for Patronelli in the general standings
With a lead of 1:50’22', Marcos Patronelli is far from being threatened by Ignacio Casale, who in turn has almost an hour’s lead over Rafal Sonik (2:46’59' behind the leader), so the situation is far from critical in the quad general standings. As if further proof of this was needed, the gap that separates Sonik from fourth placed rider Lucas Bonetto is around 50 minutes. However, the suspense will be focused on the fight for fourth place between the leading Hondo rider (Bonetto), the Can-Am of Sebastian Palma and possible Polish rider Lukasz Laskawiec a little further back.
19:14 Quads: Smith’s win confirmed
The Australian Honda rider finished in first place in front of the Yamahas ridden by Gaston Gonzales and Marcos Patronelli, by respectively 4’18' and 5’42'. Lucas Bonetto finished in fourth place, 15’31' behind Smith, but ahead of Sebastian Husseini, 16’01' behind the Australian. Kees Koolen grabbed sixth place, 18’19' behind the stage winner.
18:24 Quads: Smith wins as Husseini goes AWOL
Australian Paul Smith has won the stage after benefitting from what looks to be a navigation error on the last section by Husseini, who lost his bearings just after CP2. He finished 4’18' ahead of Gaston Gozalez and 5’42' ahead of Marcos Patronelli.
17:49 Quads: Husseini takes control
After 200 km, the competitors who have not yet passed through CP1 have stopped and will head straight to the bivouac. Since the quad special has made it passed this point, the battle continues. Sebastian Husseini leads Paul Smith by 2’01', whilst Gaston Gonzales occupies third place, 6’21' behind the Emirati, but ahead of Marcos Patronelli, who trails the stage leader by 9’46'.
17:26 : Car/truck race stopped at CP1
The weather conditions have deteriorated further than forecast and the dry river beds that cross the route today are in a state of torrential flood. The rally organisers have decided to stop the special for the cars and trucks. We await further news on the matter.
17:08 Quads: Smith under threat from Husseini
After 120 km, Sebastian Husseini is starting to catch up with stage leader Paul Smith and only trails the Australian by 1’40'. Argentinean Gaston Gonzalez is in third, 5’42' behind Smith, Marcos Patronelli is in provisional fourth, 10’31' behind the stage leader and Ignacio Casale trails the frontrunner by 22’39'. These positions are likely to change, bearing in mind that most of the category’s leading lights made a navigational mistake after 33 km of the special.
16:19 Quads: Smith takes command after 83 km
Australian Paul Smith is the quickest so far, with a lead of 2’45' over Argentina’s Gagliardi, 4’25 over Chile’s Palma, 5’25” over Germany’s Carignani and 5’36” over France’s Delesque. The leaders of the general standings, including Marcos Patronelli, are currently lying on the positions after tenth place.
15:05 Quads: All new leading trio after 51 km
Peruvian Umbert Okumura leads the quad race, 1’18” ahead of Australian Paul Smith and 1’32” in front of Argentinean Luciano Gagliardi. It seems that all the competitors who started at the front of the race made the same navigational error after 33 km.
14:51 Quads: Casale stuck in the sand?
Just after the 53 km point of the special, Chilean Ignacio Casale has been at a standstill for several minutes. Slightly to the left of the route, whereas most of the other riders are passing to the right, quid rider No. 254 has already lost at least half a dozen minutes.
14:46 Quads: Navigation errors for the quads too
Sebastian Husseini, several minutes ago, and Laurent-Duverney-Pret, at this very moment, as well as Rafal Sonik, Tomas Maffei and Lukasz Laskawiec have taken the wrong direction after 33 km.
14:18 Quads: Laskawiec dans in the dunes
Now the quads have made their entrance into the timed section. Polish rider Lukasz Laskawiec was the first to get down to business at 9.56 AM local time.
12:22 Quads: Now for the quads
With Lukasz Laskawiec, winner of yesterday’s stage, the 26 quads expected at the start are heading towards Fiambala. The first will start the special at 9.56 AM local time.
17:26 : Car/truck race stopped at CP1
The weather conditions have deteriorated further than forecast and the dry river beds that cross the route today are in a state of torrential flood. The rally organisers have decided to stop the special for the cars and trucks. We await further news on the matter.
16:58 Trucks: The trucks are under starter’s orders
Russian Andrey Karginov left the starting point of the special at 12.39 PM local time behind the wheel of his Kamaz truck. He was followed by Dutchmen Van den Bosch (DAF) and Van den Brink (Ginaf).
12:47 Trucks: The trucks head to Fiambala
Now the trucks have made their appearance on the link stage towards the start of the special. 64 trucks have been authorised to start the special and tackle the famous dunes.
