20:29 Cars: Peter and Nasser still close in the general
With a gap of only 3’14', the two car category leaders are maintaining the suspense after 7 stages of the rally and more than 3,500 kilometres. A certain way behind them, 44’03' to be precise, but also in a battle, this time for third place, Giniel de Villiers and his Toyota are still holding off Russian Leonid Novitskiy (48’54' behind Peterhansel). Guerlain Chicherit, currently fifth, is 1:17’05' behind the race leader.
19:52 Cars: More finishers in the car category
The competitors are arriving at the finish after 218 kilometres of the special stage. Behind Peterhansel, Chicherit, Gordon and Terranova, Giniel de Villiers has grabbed fifth place, 1’32' behind the stage winner, ahead of Nasser Al-Attiyah and Leonid Novitskiy, respectively 1’56' and 4’07' behind Peter.
19:49 Cars: Chicherit finishes second for a French one-two
Guerlain Chicherit’s fast pace was not enough to make the difference on the last part of the special, more twisty than the rest of the route, which is what perhaps allowed Stéphane Peterhansel to win the special stage. Chicherit came in 12' behind the general standings leader.
19:30 Cars: Waiting for Chicherit at the finish
The battle has turned into a duel between Stéphane Peterhansel, currently first, 1’08’’ in front of Robby Gordon, because Nasser Al-Attiyah had to lower his pace at the end of the special, dropping into fourth place, 1’56' behind Peter. Current third place is occupied by Argentinean Orlando Terranova, 1’11' Peterhansel. However, only these four cars have arrived, so the situation is likely to change.
19:27 Cars: Chicherit raises the pace
Guerlain Chicherit has raised the pace nearing the finish of the special stage. He currently leads the car stage after 182 km, in front of Stéphane Petehansel and Robby Gordon. Giniel de Villiers climbs into fourth place whilst Nasser Al-Attiyah drops down into fifth.
18:57 Cars: Chicherit still in the reckoning after 142 km
The Frenchman no longer leads, but is still in reach of the front of the race, losing only 23 seconds to Nasser Al-Attiyah after 142 km. Behind him, Peterhansel and Gordon still lead Giniel de Villiers, 1’35' behind, Orlando Terranova, 1’51' behind, Leonid Novitskiy, 2’45' behind and Ronan Chabot, 3’10' behind the stage leader.
18:53 Cars: Very close after 142 km
The first three cars to start are involved in a titanic struggle: Nasser Al-Attiyah still leads the special stage with a total time of 56’45'. Stéphane Peterhansel is in second position and Robby Gordon in third, respectively 38' and 43' behind the Qatari.
18:30 Cars: Chicherit into the lead after 74 km
At the first check point, French driver Guerlain Chicherit has put his SMG buggy 23 seconds ahead of the previous leaders who are nearing the second time check point on the special stage. They are still separated by a small gap: just 34 seconds.
18:25 Cars: Behind the virtual podium after 74 km
As consistent as ever, Giniel de Villiers is fourth, 1’02'behind the current leader. The BMW X3 driven by Orlando Terranova is fifth and the Mini of Leonid Novitsliy is sixth, respectively 1’08' and 1’28' behind the Qatari. It should be noted that the speeds of the 4x4 seem significantly slower than those of the Qatar Red Bull Buggy and the Hummer on these very quick portions.
18:21 Cars: The situation after 74 km
The battle between the race leaders is close because the front three are within thirty seconds of each other. Naser Al-Attiyah leads Robby Gordon’s Hummer by a small 16 seconds and the Mini of Stéphane Peterhansel by 35”. Quicker than the bikes on this section, the top speeds are reaching 180 kmph.
17:43 Cars: Al-Attiyah on the chage
This time, it is certain: the Qatari driver Nasser Al-Attiyah has launched into this high speed special at 1.31 PM local time. The first time-check will arrive in around half an hour.
17:43 Cars: Al-Attiyah on the charge
This time, it is certain: the Qatari driver Nasser Al-Attiyah has launched into this high speed special at 1.31 PM local time. The first time-check will arrive in around half an hour.
17:21 Cars: Car special start delayed
Contrary to the previous announcement, Nasser Al-Attiyah has not yet started the special and will set off at 13’21”, since the start of the stage has been delayed by 30 minutes.
17:09 Cars: Start of the car special
At 12.51 PM local time, Nasser Al-Attiyah started the special stage ahead of Stéphane Peterhansel and Robby Gordon.
14:02 : Cars and trucks on the link stage
At 7.11 AM local time, the first car started out along the link stage to the start of the day’s special stage. Nasser Al-Attiyah leads the procession of the 112 cars authorised to start this morning. A little later, the 67 trucks will head out towards the Andean summits, led by Gerard De Rooy.
19:18 Bikes: Despres up and running again
The KTM rider’s GPS is now signalling that he is on the move and is heading towards the bike/quad bivouac, located near to Cachi, at a moderate speed.
19:09 Bikes: Despres breaks down on the link stage!
Cyril Despres has just notified that he has broken down 133 km along the link stage, just around thirty kilometres away from the bivouac. Apparently, the Frenchman’s bike has completely stopped responding. He is having to repair by himself, because he cannot rely on his assistance team during the Marathon stage for the bikes and the quads. These two categories are in a different bivouac to the cars and trucks, and the riders are on their own.
17:13 Bikes: Despres’ problems
The Frenchman, who finished the day 13’08’’ behind the stage winner, losing several places in the general standings, had gearbox problems. He was not able to use his fifth gear which, in such a fast special stage, was a major constraint.
16:48 Bikes: Changes to the top 5 in the general standings
Behind Olivier Pain, still leader, Francisco Lopez now occupies second place, 6’06' behind the Frenchman, but ahead of David Casteu, who trails his countryman by 6’37'. Ruben Faria is in fourth place in front Cyril Despres in fifth, respectively 9’42' and 14’07' behind the leader.
16:43 Bikes: Casteu eighth
Behind the top five, sixth place is occupied by Juan Pedrero Garcia, 2’42' behind the stage winner, followed by Poland’s Kuba Przygonski, 2’51' behind Caseilli, and David Casteu, 3’12' behind the day’s victor. Stefan Svitko and Alessandro Botturi make up the rest of the top 10.
16:39 Bikes: Farres Guell back on the move
The Spanish rider is back on the move in the special stage and has just reached the 144-km point.
16:37 Bikes: Verhoeven and Pain behind Caselli
The young French leader of the general bike standings is not ready to budge even an inch: by finishing 1’23' behind the day’s winner at the same time as Francisco Lopez, he strengthens his lead. Frans Verhoeven has made a comeback with fourth place, 1’30' behind Caselli, in front of provisional fifth placed rider Ruben Faria. Cyril Despres has lost 13 minutes on this special stage and drops back to 14’07” from the leader in the general standings.
16:27 Bikes: Caselli wins his first special stage
Replacing Marc Coma on a KTM bike, Kurt Caselli perhaps did not expect to win a special stage on the Dakar 2013. However, that is just what the American has done on this ultra-fast timed section, gobbling up the 218 kilometres in a time of 1:51’31”.
16:03 Bikes: Farres Guell breaks down
Spanish biker Gérard Farres Guell has stopped after 138.5 km. He is been repairing his motorbike for the last ten minutes.
16:01 Bikes: Viladoms at a standstill
The Spanish rider has ground to a halt just after the 38-km mark, at a point where the rally route follows an earthen track. He appears to be suffering technical problems.
15:42 Bikes: Caselli has a solid lead
Even though his lead is slight, Kurt Caselli still remains out in front of the special ahead of Olivier Pain and Frans Verhoeven by 1’11'. At the 142-km point, Cyril Despres has again lost time and trails the stage leader by 8’59'. Another of the leading trio in the general standings, David Casteu has posted a time in the top 10, a little less than 3 minutes behind Caselli.
15:14 Bikes: Pain behind Caselli
With the sixth rider reaching the first time-check point, the provisional order has changed: Olivier Pain is on the coat tails of Kurt Caselli, with only three seconds separating the two bikers. Frans Verhoeven climbs into joint third place alongside Polish rider Kuba Przygosky, 27” behind the leader.
15:09 Bikes: Caselli leads
Now that the first 5 competitors have reached the first intermediate point, Aemerican Kurt Caselli provisionally leads the stage, 51 seconds ahead of Francisco Lopez, 1’11' in front of Alessandro Botturi, 2’29' ahead of Ruben Faria and 3’02' in front of Cyril Despres.
14:34 Bikes: Start of the bike special
Francisco Lopez started the special stage at 10.10 AM local time. 218 km lie ahead of him, on the first timed section on Argentine soil on the Dakar 2013. The first 136 km of the special stage will take place on earthen tracks before a more rocky section leading up to the finishing line.
10:02 Bikes: Chaleco faces the Andes
The Dakar rises at dawn this morning. The caravan is due to set off at 4:30 am local time, with the motorcycles leading the charge, as usual. Francisco López will be at the front of the 145 motorcycles cleared to start today's stage. The 29 quads still in the race (with Ignacio Casale at the front) will be hot on his heels in a link section which will take them within sight of the Bolivian border before going through Argentina. A 417 km link stage will warm up the drivers and riders before tackling a 218 km special at over 3,400 metres above sea level.
19:45 Quads: Patronelli still in command
Argentinean Marcos Patronelli slightly increased his lead today, to 1:14’30 ahead of Ignacio Casale and 1:50’46' ahead of Rafal Sonik. South African Sarel Van Biljon is now fourth, 2:02’18' behind the leader, and Sebastian Palma, following his stage victory today, retains fifth place, 2:32’26' behind Patronelli.
18:08 Quads: Palma wins!
Sebastian Palma has won the seventh special stage of the Dakar 2013 with a time of 2:25’06'. Second, 34' behind, lies Marcos Patronelli, only four small seconds ahead of South African Van Biljon. Ignacio Casale is in fourth 3’08' behind Palma and Rafal Sonik is fifth, 12' behind Casale.
17:48 Quads: Will it be Palma’s day?
He has come through the time check points almost three quarters of an hour behind the leaders, but nonetheless he is leading the quad race less than 30 km from the finishing line: Chilean Sebastian Palma is in the process of putting the elite quad riders in the shade. He currently boasts a 49 second lead at the fourth time-check point.
17:18 Quads: Quad race still changing after 182 km!
Behind Van Biljon and Patronelli, who are only separated by 10 seconds, Peruvian Flores Seminario is third after 182 km, 2’10” behind the stage leader. Behind him, Ignacio Casale is staging a small comeback, trailing Van Biljon by 2’15' whereas Rafal Sonik trails the South African by 2’20'. The gaps are still small ahead of sixth placed Claudio Clavigliasso, 4’07' behind the stage leader. Previously in third, Sebastian Palma has not reached the time check point yet.
17:07 Quads: Palma, Clavigliasso and the others
Chilean rider Palma has made his appearance in the top three, 50' behind the leader, in front of Claudio Clavigliasso in fourth place and the Yamaha of Flores Seminario in fifth, respectively 1’52' and 2’22' behind the leader. Ignacio Casale, who was in third at the previous time check, has dropped down to sixth.
16:30 Quads: The duel at the front continues
At the third check point, Van Biljon has regained the lead from Patronelli, now finding himself 27 seconds ahead. Ignacio Casale lies 2’41' behind the current stage leader, but for the moment, only these three quads have reached this point.
16:08 Quads: Patronelli takes control
The Argentinean quad rider now leads, but only just since his lead is limited to 9 seconds. Ignacio Casale is in provisional third, 1’58’’ behind the stage leader after 113 km.
15:58 Quads: Van Biljon leads!
South Africain Sarel Van Biljon leads the quad special stage after 74 km, 15’’ in front of Marcos Patronelli. The Can-Am ridden by Argentinean Claudio Clavigliasso is third, 1’10' behind the leader and just 1 second in front of the Yamaha ridden by Ignacio Casale.
14:47 Quads: The Quads are on their way to Salta

14:02 : Cars and trucks on the link stage
At 7.11 AM local time, the first car started out along the link stage to the start of the day’s special stage. Nasser Al-Attiyah leads the procession of the 112 cars authorised to start this morning. A little later, the 67 trucks will head out towards the Andean summits, led by Gerard De Rooy.
20:38 Trucks: Breathing space for De Rooy in the general
Even if the gaps are not dizzying between the leaders, Gerard De Rooy (Iveco) gave himself some room for manoeuvre today. He boasts a lead of 22’08' over Eduard Nikolaev (Kamaz) and 41’25' over Martin Kolomy (Tatra). 1:24’10' behind the Dutchman, Andrey Karginov (Kamaz) is himself in front of Czech Tatra driver Ales Loprais (1:57’19' behind the general standings leader).
20:35 Trucks: De Rooy peels away from the pack
The stage victory has gone to Dutchman Gerard de Rooy, with a time of 2:02’21', building on the first place obtained on the first half of the stage. In second place, Ales Loprais (Tatra) finished 1’09' behind, but in front of Andrey Karginov’s Kamaz (1’38' behind De Rooy) and Pieter Versluis (Man), 2’11” behind the Dutch Iveco driver. Miki Biasion completes the top 5, 2’21' behind the stage leader, followed by Martin Kolomy (2’54' behind De Rooy), Eduard Nikolaev and MArcel Van Vliet.
20:01 Trucks: Loprais up to second place after 182 km
