21:26 Cars: Al Attiyah versus Peterhansel in the general standings
The situation in the car general standings is now a two horse race, in light of these two men’s isolation at the top of the leader board. The whims of the desert eliminated Nani Roma and Carlos Sainz as potential threats. Peter now has a lead of 1’18' over Nasser, whilst third placed driver Giniel de Villiers is 42’31' behind the leader and fourth placed Leonid Novitskiy trails the Frenchman by 44’47'. The SMG buggy driven by Guerlain Chicherit (1:16’26' behind the leader) lies in front of Ronan Chabot’s (1h27’52' behind Peterhansel), which in turn is ahead of Nani Roma’s Mini (1:30’52' behind his team-mate).
21:03 Cars: End of section 2: Alvarez, Chabot, Chicherit and Wevers
These are the names of the four drivers that round off the top 10: seventh is Lucio Alvarez (Toyota), 25’36' behind Al Attiyah, eighth and ninth are the SMG buggies driven by Ronan Chabot (+) and Guerlain Chicherit, respectively 25’53' and 28’28' behind the Qatari), whilst tenth place is taken up by the HRX driven by Erik Wevers, 30’16' behind the stage winner.
20:27 Cars: More finishers
The cars are coming in little by little at the finishing line of the special. Three new competitors have positioned themselves after the provisional leading trio. Fourth place goes to Orlando Terranova, 14’13' behind Nasser Al-Attiyah, fifth to Leonid Novitskiy, 15’48' behind the Qatari and sixth to Giniel de Villiers, 17’17' behind the stage winner. However, these results are still only provisional…
20:04 Cars: End of section 2: Al-Attiyah beats Peter
At the finish of the second timed section, the situation is much the same as beforehand. Nasser Al-Attiyah has won the special stage with a time of 4:52’08', beating Stéphane Peterhansel by 8’36'. Robby Gordon is currently in third place, 13’52' behind the Qatari, but these three drivers are the only ones to finish so far. With the arrival of their pursuers, the last place on the day’s podium could change.
19:38 Cars: No surprises after 364 km
After 364 km of the special stage (with less than 100 km to the finishing line), Nasser Al-Attiyah still leads ahead of Stéphane Peterhansel, Robby Gordon, Orlando Terranova, Leonid Novitskiy and Giniel de Villiers. Guerlain Chicherit, who drove at an excellent pace on the first portion of the special, has still not reached the 364-km point. He should pass by around forty minutes after the first group.
18:03 Cars: End of section 1: Chicherit third
More than half an hour after the other leaders of the car category, Guerlain Chicherit (Buggy SMG) has just achieved a superb third placed provisional time on completion of the first timed section of the stage. Suffering from sore arms after a steering problem yesterday, the Frenchman has recovered well and now lies only 6 seconds behind Stéphane Peterhansel, who occupies second place behind Nasser Al Attiyah.
17:42 Cars: End of section 1: Al-Attiyah dominant
With Nani Roma dropping down the field due to being stuck in the dunes and Sainz losing time due to a broken engine, the team-mate of Carlos “El Matador”, Nasser Al-Attiyah (Qatar Red Bull), is out in front in the car special stage with a total time of 2:27’24'. He leads Stéphane Peterhansel (Mini) by 6’24', Robby Gordon (Hummer) by 8’18', Leonid Novitskiy (Mini) by 12’53' and Giniel de Villiers (Toyota) by 14’25'. However, Guerlain Chicherit, who started in 24th place this morning, has still not finished the first portion and could sneak into the top 5.
17:07 Cars: Sainz close to dropping out?
Carlos Sainz is at a standstill after 181 km of the special stage and is having mechanical problems with his buggy. The Spaniard has signalled that it is an engine problem that neither he nor co-pilot Timo Göttschalk can repair.
17:00 Cars: Duel between Novitskiy and Terranova
The Russion driver of Mini No. 307 and the X-Raid team’s Argentinean BMW X3 driver are locked in struggle for fifth place. Only 23 seconds separate them on completion of the first timed section (131-km long). Giniel de Villiers and Pascal Thomasse have indeed lost time in the sand, trailing the stage leader by 13’52' and 16’44' respectively.
16:36 Cars: One-two for Al-Attiyah and Sainz at CP2
In this special that promises changes in the top 10, Qatari Nasser Al-Attiyah (Qatar Red Bull) provisionally leads after 131 km ahead of his team-mate Carlos Sainz (Qatar Red Bull), 3’07' behind. General standings leader Stéphane Peterhansel (Mini) is third, 5’40' behind Nasser, and Robby Gordon (Hummer) is in fourth, 7’08' behind the stage leader.
16:29 Cars: Sousa's progress halted
The Portuguese driver on the Great Wall Haval team has also ground to a halt after 75 km, several dozen metres away from Nani Roma who is still stuck in the same place. Pascal Thomasse and his buggy are also stuck in this area
16:19 : Out of the frying pan into the fire for De Villiers
After having got stuck near Nani Roma after 75 km, with only a small loss of time as a result, Giniel de Villiers ground to a halt several kilometres further on (after 82 km) alongside other competitors stuck in the sand. However, the Toyota Hilux driver has managed to set off again.
16:04 Cars: Roma still stuck, De Villiers has a close shave
Spanish driver Nani Roma is still stopped after 75 km, in a sandy zone that has already caught out other competitors. It almost cost Giniel de Villiers dearly: he remained at a standstill for several minutes in this very same place. However, the South African managed to free himself and for the moment has only lost a few minutes.
15:43 Cars: Roma in the sand
Nani Roma (Mini) looks to be currently in difficulty in the sand dunes after 75 km of the timed section. The Spanish driver has been at a standstill for several minutes, probably stuck in the sand.
14:43 Cars: The Minis are on their way
Nani Roma, followed by Stéphane Peterhansel, has started the day’s special stage, on a mainly mixed terrain, apart from ten kilometres of pure sand in the first third. The duel with the buggies, in particular the one driven by Nasser Al-Attiyah, is starting up again with renewed vigour.
11:25 Cars: Heading towards Calama
Nani Roma won yesterday’s stage and he has the privilege of leading the convoy along the link stage today to the start of the special stage, followed by team-mate Stéphane Petehansel and American Robby Gordon (Hummer). After the 291-km stretch of road, they will tackle a timed section of 455 km in length, divided into two sections.
09:30 : Arica-Calama: getting to grips with the Atacama
On the day’s menu, there will be 291 kilometres of link stage then 455 km of special stage for all categories. This evening, at the bivouac in Calama, the rally will have covered almost 3,000 km. For the first special stage on Chilean territory this year there will be a return to the Atacama Desert: sand and dunes make up two thirds of the distance. However, the stopwatch will be ticking on two distinct portions separated by a neautralised zone, with the second section holding a perhaps unhappy reacquaintance for some with fesh-fesh. In total, the day will be a very long one, to such an extent where the competitors’ bodies will start to suffer from the lack of sleep, especially for those who have experienced several mishaps. A race hierarchy is starting to develop, though whilst Marcos Patronelli is comfortably installed at the top of the quad general standings, the three other categories are much closer. In the bikes behind Olivier Pain, the first 25 riders are all within the same hour. In the car race, for the top 8 Stéphane Peterhansel is still within reach. In the truck race, the battle is on between Kamaz, Iveco, Man and Tatra… And the comeback that Gerard De Rooy is promising will be one of the high points of the day.
21:11 Bikes: Chaleco closes in in the general standings
The French trio are still on top on completion of the sixth stage, but in a different order: Olivier Pain still leads, 2’22' ahead of Cyril Despres. David Casteu drops down a place to third, 4’48” behind the race leader. Following his stage victory, Francisco Lopez now lies in fourth place, trailing Pain by 6’06'. Ruben Faria is fifth, 8’35' behind the young Frenchman.
18:40 Bikes: End of section 2: behind the top 3
American Kurt Caselli has finished fourth, 4’48' behind the day’s winner. Italian Alessandro Botturi is fifth, 5’35' behind Chaleco, followed by Jeremias Israel Esquerre, 6’13 behind the stage winner, and Frans Verhoeven, 6’41' behind Lopez. Trailing the day’s winner by 6’58', 7’22' and 7’33' respectively are Hélder Rodrigues, Juan Pedrero Garcia and Olivier Pain, to complete the top 10.
18:17 Bikes: End of section 2: Chaleco wins!
The Chilean rider has won the first fully Chilean special stage of the year with a total time of 4:56’21' in front of Portugal’s Ruben Faria (2’34 behind). Cyril Despres is provisionally in third, 3’48' behind the winner, gaining 4 minutes on Olivier Pain and more than 7 minutes over David Casteu. Once several more competitors have arrived, notably Kurt Caselli, there should be a clearer picture of the stage finishes in the bike category.
17:59 Bikes: Chaleco takes up the baton
Francisco Lopez, who was second before Paulo Gonçalves experienced problems, has taken over first place after 364 km less than 100 km from the finishing line. He leads Ruben Faria, Kurt Caselli and Cyril Despres who still has the leading group within reach and boasts a big advantage over Olivier Pain and David Casteu, the first and second placed riders in the general standings yesterday evening.
17:22 Bikes: Gonçalves on his way again
The Portuguese rider was only halted for around five minutes. The reason for this stop is still unknown.
17:20 Bikes: Gonçalves at a standstill
Whilst he was leading the stage, Portugal’s Paulo Gonçalves ground to a halt after 333 km of the special stage. The reason is unknown, but the biker is in a very rocky zone so it could be due to a puncture.
16:11 Bikes: Behind the leaders
The riders are continuing to complete the first portion of the special stage, meaning the positions are changing fairly constantly. Behind the leading quartet, which remains unchanged, fifth place is occupied by Kurt Caselli 3’06 behind the stage leader, whereas sixth placed biker Jeremias Israel Esquerre trails Gonçlaves by 16'. Gerard Farres Guell should also find himself in this pack and will be finishing in the minutes that follow.
16:00 Bikes: End of section1: Gonçalves leads
The Portuguese Husqvarna rider wearing No. 20 leads after the first 228 km of the special stage. For the moment, he leads Francisco Lopez by 29'. Ruben Faria lies in third, 54' behind Chaleco. In fourth, Jordi Viladoms trails Faria by 1’15'. Cyril Despres is almost four minutes behind the stage leader, but has a considerable lead himself over Olivier Pain and David Casteu. If the situation remains the same, he could leapfrog them this evening in the general standings.
15:20 Bikes: Alain Duclos sets off again
The Frenchman spent a long time at a halt after 45 km. Two of his team-mates stopped as they passed him, but then set off again leaving him on his own. Duclos has finally managed to set off again and has currently covered 60 km of the special stage.
15:03 Bikes: Gonçlaves leads at CP1
A little more than half way through the first part of the day’s stage - after 131 kilometres to be precise - Paulo Gonçalves (Portugal/Husqvarna) provisionally leads the stage in front of Ruben Faria (Portugal/KTM) by 1’15', Jordi Villadoms (Spain/Husqvarna) by 1’39' and Francisco Lopez (Chile/KTM) by 1’46'. The leading pair in the general standings, Olivier Pain and David Casteu, have so far lost 7’58' and 10’50' respectively to the stage leader. Cyril Despres is currently 14th, 5’43' behind Gonçlaves.
14:29 Bikes: Alain Duclos at a standstill
After 45 km of the special stage, Alain Duclos has been at a standstill for a few minutes in a zone of dunes. He has been joined by Frank Verhoestraete, his team-mate in the Sherko team, as well as by the other rider on the team, British biker James West.
13:39 Bikes: Patronelli on the defensive
The leader of the quad general standings, Marcos Patronelli set off as scheduled (at 9.19 AM local time) on Thursday’s special stage. With more than an hour’s lead in the general standings, he can allow himself to concentrate on maintaining his advantage over his main rivals, Lukas Laskawiec and Ignacio Casale seront, who have followed him out onto the special stage.
13:03 Bikes: David Casteu starts the special
The French Yamaha rider has just started today’s special, tackling the first 229 kilometres, followed by a 96-km neutralised zone, before the final 129 km against the clock. Behind Casteu, general standings leader Olivier Pain will try and maintain his lead, but will have to resist the ambitions of title holder Cyril Despres.
11:19 Bikes: Casteu on the road
The winner of yesterday’s stage, David Casteu, is opening the road today in front of his countryman Olivier Pain and Spaniard Juan Pedrero Garcia. The 151 bikes authorised to start today will ride 291 km of link stage before tackling 455 km of special stage, with the bivouac at Calama as their destination.
09:30 : Arica-Calama: getting to grips with the Atacama
On the day’s menu, there will be 291 kilometres of link stage then 455 km of special stage for all categories. This evening, at the bivouac in Calama, the rally will have covered almost 3,000 km. In the truck race, the battle is on between Kamaz, Iveco, Man and Tatra… And the comeback that Gerard De Rooy is promising will be one of the high points of the day.
21:16 Quads: No stress for Patronelli in the general standings
The Argentinean quad rider rode just as he wanted to day, without looking for victory, but keeping up with the pace of the day’s winner Chilean Ignacio Casale. The gap between the two men in the general standings this evening stands at 1:11’56', whilst third placed rider Rafal Sonik is 1:48’00 Marcos. Returning to fourth place, South African Sarel Van Blijon (E-ATV) nonetheless trails the race leader by more than two hours (2:02’14'), as does fifth placed Sebastian Palma (Can-am), 2:33’00' behind.
19:13 Quads: End of section 2: Casale wins at home
Like Francisco Lopez, Ignacio Casale enjoyed his home-coming today. The Chilean rider won this stage with a race time of 5:35’21'. By a margin of 6’36', he beat the leader of the general quad standings, Marcos Patronelli, who defended his overall position. The third placed rider has still not finished.
18:58 Quads: Casale in front of Patronelli after 364 km
The day seems to be smiling on Chilean riders: Ignacio Casale is leading a stage for the first time on the Dakar 2013 in the quad category, ahead of Marcos Patronelli. Currently fighting for third place are Sarel Van Biljon and Sebastian Husseini, with the South African slightly ahead of the Emirati.
17:35 Quads: End of section 1: Husseini in third
The Emirati rider has ridden his quad into third place in the provisional positions on the special stage. The gap between him and the stage leader, Chilien Ignacio Casale, is 7’58'. Rafal Sonik occupies fifth place behind Sarel Van Biljon but in front of Tomas Maffei. However, he already trails the stage leader by 13 minutes over the first portion of the stage.
16:56 Quads: End of section 1: Casale first
Ignacio Casale, who led half way through the first section, has preserved his advantage at the end of section one with a total time of 2:54’32' and is leads the general standings leader Marcos Patronelli by 7’25'. Sarel Van Biljon occupies current third place and trails the stage leader by 10’27'. Tomas Maffei still has not finished the first section, but should arrive in the top 5.
16:26 Quads: Husseini’s back!
Dreadfully unfortunate during yesterday’s special stage, Sebastian Husseini has made a comeback: after starting in 31st place this morning, he currently occupies second place in the quad special stage, less than four minutes behind the current leader Ignacio Casale.
15:39 Quads: Ignacio Casale leads at CP1
After 131 kilometres, Chilean Ignacio Casale is out in front, leading Argentinean Marcos Patronelli by a little less than a minute. The third place rider Sarel Van Biljon is already almost 8’30' behind the stage leader.
11:22 Quads: The Quads on the move
After the bikes, the leaders after yeasterday’s stage in the quad category have hit the road. Marcos Patronelli, also leader of the general standings, will be followed by Lukasz Laskawiec and Ignacio Casale. Unlucky Sébastian Husseini, former second placed rider in the general standings, will be bringing up the rear.
11:22 Quads: The Quads on the move
After the bikes, the leaders after yesterday’s stage in the quad category have hit the road. Marcos Patronelli, also leader of the general standings, will be followed by Lukasz Laskawiec and Ignacio Casale. 21:56 Trucks: De Rooy opens a gap in the general standings
After problems on the special stage, Eduard Nikolaev loses ground on the first place held by Gerard De Rooy. However, 18’40' is still a gap that does not allow the leader to relax, just like the 30’32' that separates the Dutchman from Ayrat Mardeev or the 38’31' between the race leader and Martin Kolomy. It is from fifth place held by Andrey Karginov that the differential with the leader exceeds the one hour mark: 1:22’32' for the Russian and 1:56’10' for Czech driver Ales Loprais. The gap is even above two hours for seventh placed Pieter Versluis who is battling with his for position with his team-mate (Man) Marcel Van Vliet.
21:49 Trucks: End of section 2: De Rooy tastes victory again
The Dutchman probably did not spare his truck to reel in his opponents on the last part of the route, because in the first half, it was dominated by the Kamaz, Man and Tatra trucks. Andrey Karginov finsished in second, 34' behind De Rooy, only one second ahead of Pieter Versluis, such was the intensity of the battle. In fourth place, Ales Loprais came in 1’45' after the stage winner. The gaps were bigger thereafter: 5’55' for fifth placed Miki Biasion, and 7’13' for sixth placed Martin Kolomy. Having led throughout the first section of the special stage, Eduard Nikolaev finished 13’07' behind the day’s winner.
21:05 Trucks: Nikolaev back on his way
The Russian driver of Kamaz truck No. 501 is now heading to the finish of the special stage. He has around 60 km to cover and is in the region of sixth place, behind the Tatra of Martin Kolomy.
20:41 Trucks: Nicolaev at a standstill
The leader of the truck special stage, Eduard Nikolaev, has ground to a halt after 384 km for the last five minutes, probably due to mechanical problems. He will most probably lose the lead of the stage to Ales Loprais since the two were involved in a close struggle.
19:09 Trucks: End of section 1: Nikolaev and Loprais almost neck and neck
Twenty one seconds separate the Russian Kamaz driver and the Czech Tatra driver who occupy the first two positions on the truck special stage. In third place lies the Man truck driven by Pieter Versluis, 1’44' behind the leader, but in front of Gerard De Rooy’s Iveco (4’03' behind Nikolaev), the Kamaz belonging to Andrei Karginov (5’28' behind the Russian) and the Iveco of Italy’s Miki Biasion (+5’47' behind the stage leader).
18:13 Trucks: Ivecos struggling at CP2
The two Iveco trucks driven by Miki Biasion and Gerard De Rooy are struggling in fifth and sixth respectively at CP2 (after 131 km). The Tatras, Kamaz and Man trucks are leading the stage: Eduard Nikolaev (Kamaz) is in front with a total time of 1:56’58'. 39' behind him, Czech driver Ales Loprais (Tatra) occupies second place ahead of the Man truck driven by Pieter Versluis (2’51' behind the stage leader). Marcel Van Vliet (Man) is fourth, 5’13' behind Nikolaev, followed by Biasion and De Rooy respectively 5’31' and 6’26' behind the Russian.
17:17 Trucks: Stacey immobilised
The Dutch driver’s Iveco has apparently been badly damaged after an accident (the truck rolled over forwards) after 79 km. The crew are ok, but the truck has been unable to carry on.
16:07 Trucks: The Iveco vs. Kamaz battle commences
The trucks have started the special stage: Hans Stacey leads ahead of Eduard Nikolaev, Gerard De Rooy and Ayrat Mardeev. The struggle between the category’s elite drivers promises to be titanic…
11:29 Trucks: The trucks head toward the special
Hans Stacey (Iveco) is leading the convoy of trucks to the special stage start. The Dutchman from the De Rooy team set off at 6.41 AM local time, followed by the Kamaz truck driven by Eduard Nikolaev and the Iveco of general standings leader Gerard De Rooy.
09:30 : Arica-Calama: getting to grips with the Atacama
On the day’s menu, there will be 291 kilometres of link stage then 455 km of special stage for all categories. This evening, at the bivouac in Calama, the rally will have covered almost 3,000 km.
