22:09 : Nazca-Arequipa: alone in the desert
The drivers and riders will face 720 kilometres in the next few hours in what will be the longest stage since the start of the 2013 Dakar. The difficulty goes up a notch. This stage is a beefed-up version of the one that was run in the opposite direction in 2012, wreaking pure havoc. The route will be slightly different for the cars and the motorcycles, which will have to visit the three refuelling points in their road books. One of them comes 173 km into the special. They'll also tackle a 2 km slide downhill in the first third of the special. All in all, another momentous stage in this rally. The big favourites Despres, Peterhansel, De Rooy and Patronelli (most of them winners in 2012) took the lead on Monday, but their margins are still small and there's no doubt that Tuesday will be a very eventful day.
18:25 Cars: Peter still in command of the general standings
Following the finish in Arequipa, Stéphane Peterhansel (Mini) is still ahead in the car category standings with a short lead over Nasser Al-Attiyah (Qatar Red Bull): 5’16' separate the two men. The regularity of South African Giniel de Villiers (Toyota) has provided him with third place, but 33’22” behind the race leader, followed closely by Russian Leonid Novitskiy (Mini), 33’48' behind Peterhansel. At 39’06' beind his team leader, Nani Roma (Mini) lies in fifth, ahead of Guerlain Chicherit, who gained time back over the general standings leader, but who is nevertheless 42’32' behind.

17:50 Cars: Al-Attiyah wins the special!
In spite of the domination by Guerlain Chicherit (FRA/SMG) during the intermediate part, in the end Nasser Al-Attiyah (Buggy Qatar Red Bull) won the day’s special in the last few kilometres, ahead of the Frenchman driving for the SMG team. Thirty six seconds separated the two men on completion of the 289 km of the timed section! Stéphane Peterhansel (FRA/Mini) finished in third place 1’17' ahead of Giniel de Villiers (AFS/Toyota) who came in 4’15' behind the stage winner. Nani Roma (ESP/Mini), 7’27' behind Al-Attiyah, was fifth ahead of Leonid Novitskiy (RUS/Mini), 13’55' behind the Qatari.
17:17 : Stop and go for De Rooy
The leader of the truck race, Gerard De Rooy, stopped for several minutes before setting off again. He should still be in the lead in the truck category on this stage, however.
17:13 Cars: CP2: Nothing changes
227 km into the stage, the Top 5 in the car category remains pretty much the same, with Chicherit still in the lead ahead of the Peterhansel/Al-Attiyah duo, who are only 5' apart. Roma and Novitskiy are still in the Top 5 but we're waiting for Giniel de Villiers, fourth at the previous checkpoint.
16:32 : Sainz in trouble
After yesterday's electronic problems, Carlos Sainz's car seems to be giving him a hard time again. The Spaniard has been stopped near km 147 for twenty minutes now.
16:29 Cars: Chicherit leads at CP1
Lucio Álvarez and Robby Gordon are still at a standstill and therefore out of the fight for today's special, leaving Guerlain Chicherit, Stéphane Peterhansel and Nasser Al-Attiyah in the lead at kilometre point 173. There's a 1'10' gap between the two Frenchmen, with the Qatari a further 33' back. Nani Roma is driving strongly in fourth, ahead of Leonid Novitskiy.
15:24 Cars: Chicherit leads Sainz after 52 km
At the 52-km point, the race situation favours Guerlain Chicherit, who leads Carlos Sainz, Stéphane Peterhansel and Nasser Al-Attiyah in the provisional standings for the day. The front three are followed by Giniel de Villiers and Nani Roma. The virtual gaps between the leading men are not very large, but the first precise gaps will be given after 173 km. Robby Gordon and Lucio Alvarez have been at a standstill for the last hour, the American after rolling his vehicle onto the roof and the Argentinean due to technical problems.
14:37 Cars: Gordon on his roof
It was expected that Robby Gordon would attack today (like every day, in any case), but he has perhaps pushed a little too hard because it has been reported that the American’s Hummer is lying on its roof after 29 km of the special stage. The crew is unharmed, but it remains to be seen whether the American will be able to set the car up right and continue the race.
13:52 Cars: Peter leads the pack
Stéphane Peterhansel, leader of the rally, will be starting the 289 km of the special stage in several minutes, with the firm intention of increasing his lead over his pursuers. At present, the route is being opened by Nasser Al-Attiyah, winner of yesterday’s stage, for the 136 cars authorised to start the stage. Behind him, Robby Gordon will be spcing things up, whereas Carlos Sainz, whose times on the second stage have been re-adjusted by the race officials, will start in fourteenth place.

18:15 Bikes: The general standings in Arequipa
On completion of the fourth stage of the Dakar 2013, the French have managed a 1-2-3 in the general standings. 17:21 Bikes: Problems for Frétigné

17:17 : Stop and go for De Rooy
The leader of the truck race, Gerard De Rooy, stopped for several minutes before setting off again. He should still be in the lead in the truck category on this stage, however.
16:32 : Sainz in trouble
After yesterday's electronic problems, Carlos Sainz's car seems to be giving him a hard time again. The Spaniard has been stopped near km 147 for twenty minutes now.
16:24 Bikes: Rodrigues shows himself
Hélder Rodrigues (POR/Honda) improved on his lacklustre start to the rally by finishing fifth in today's special, 11'43' down on the winner. He was followed by Ruben Faria (POR/KTM), 12'18' back. Javier Pizzolito (ARG/Honda) came in seventh at 12'32' and Jordi Viladoms' Husqvarna took eighth, 12'40' down.
16:17 Bikes: Barreda Bort wins!
Spaniard Joan Barreda Bort (ESP/Husqvarna) set off in a more favourable position than yesterday and has taken advantage of it with a time of 3:41’09'. On the finishing line he beat Olivier Pain (FRA/Yamaha) by 8’23'. David Casteu (FRA/Yamaha), 10’42' behind the winner, sneaked ahead of Gérard Farres Guell (ESP/Honda), who finished 11’40' after Barreda Bort. The leading trio yesterday evening, who opened the way this morning, have lost ground on the Spaniard, but Cyril Despres just managed to do what was needed (FRA/KTM), finishing 17’35' after the day’s winner Francisco Lopez (CHL/KTM) finished 21’36' behind the Spaniard and Paulo Gonçalves (PRT/Husqvarna) came in 19’28' behind Barreda Bort.
15:45 Bikes: Barreda Bort still leads at CP2
Spanish rider Joan Barreda Bort currently leads Frenchman Olivier Pain (by 8’11') and his countryman Gérard Farres Guell (by 8’21'). David Casteu (10’10' behind Barreda Bort) lies in fourth ahead of Jordi Villadoms (11’36' behind) and Javier Pizzolito (11’43'). Having opened the road today, Cyril Despres is thirteenth (14’25' behind the day’s leader) and Chaleco nineteenth (+18’27' behind). Paulo Gonçalves is a similar amount of time behind.
14:51 Bikes: West on the move again
After more than 45 minutes at a standstill, the Sherco rider has set off again.
14:49 Bikes: Looking good for Barreda Bort…
Leading the special stage, the Spaniard has confirmed the intermediate times at CP1 after 173 km of the day’s stage. He leads Gerard Farres Guell by 5’36', Olivier Pain by 6’47' and David Casteu by 8’05'. Cyril Despres has lost 11’33' to Barreda Bort and the situation is worse for Paulo Gonçalves, 13’34' behind, and Francisco Lopez, 15’50' behind.
14:45 Bikes: Farres Guell reaches CP
As mentioned previously, the day’s openers are losing ground and a small group of 5 bikes has reached the CP within a minute of each other. Gerard Farres Guell took the initiative, with a lead of 1’11' over a group led by Olivier Pain and Alessandro Botturi Cyril Despres has lost 6 minutes, Gonçalves and Cheloco almost quarter of an hour. However, a better picture of the situation will be available when Joan Barreda Bort’s reaches the CP.
14:41 Bikes: West in trouble…
The British rider has been halted for three-quarters of an hour, just off the tracks after 75 km. He is continuing to attempt to repair his problems
14:03 Bikes: Barreda Bort back in business
After his problems during yesterday’s stage, Husqvarna’s Spanish rider Joan Barreda Bort has the bit between his teeth today and is taking advantage of tracks that are enabling him to attack. After 105 km he currently leads, ahead of Gérard Farres Guell and David Casteu. He should reach the first time-check point in 45 minutes.
13:59 Bikes: Wild West? He’s probably livid…
It looks like James West (Sherco) is haunted by bad luck: after plenty of problems yesterday, the British rider has ground to a halt after 75 km and has been busy repairing for the last five minutes.
13:55 Bikes: Verhoeven in difficulty after 108 km
Dutchman Frans Verhoeven has been at a standstill for a good ten minutes, suffering from a technical problem that he is trying to repair by himself. He should be able to set off again soon.
13:13 Bikes: Pedrero Garcia at a standstill
Forty five kilometres after the start of the special stage, Juan Pedrero Garcia, second in the Dakar 2013 on completion of the second stage, is having problems. He has been at a standstill for several minutes, most likely to deal with a technical problem.
13:05 Bikes: First riders out off the pace after 52 km
Like yesterday, it would seem that the riders opening the route and making the tracks are less at ease then their pursuers. As a result, it is the day’s ninth starter, Argentinean Javier Pozzolito who seems to be leading the dance, ahead of Olivier Pain, Gerard Fares Guell, David Casteu and Kuba Przygonski. Francisco Lopez, Paulo Gonçalves and Cyril Despres are somewhat off the pace on this first zone. However, Joan Barreda Bort also seems to be doing well having started in twenty-fourth place. The first time check point is after 173 km.
12:04 Bikes: 5.45 AM: Nazca awakes
To be precise, the competitors actually woke up a little earlier… However, the competitive action kicked off at 5.45 AM with a direct entry into the special stage for the first riders. Franciso “Chaleco” Lopez led the bikes out on his KTM, followed by Portugal’s Paulo Gonçalves and Frenchman, Cyril Despres, leader of the general standings since yesterday, to tackle 289 kilometres of timed riding amongst the dunes.

18:19 Quads: Patronelli still dominates the general standings
Marcos Patronelli was among the competitors who confirmed their domination today. With another stage victory, the Argentinean rider now has a lead of 14’06' over Sebastian Husseini, solidly anchored in second place. Third, more than an hour behind, Polish rider Rafal Sonik leads Chilean rider Ignacio Casale, who trails the race leader by 1:04’18'. 17:24 Quads: Laskawiec third to finish
After Marcos Patronelli and Sebastian Husseini, Poland’s Lukas Laskawiec has finished the day in third position, 15’45' behind the day’s winner.
17:19 Quads: Patronelli wins the stage
Marcos Patronelli continues to go from strength to strength by winning the day’s special stage by 9’48' in front of Emirati Sebastian Husseini. They are the only quad riders to have reached the finishing line so far.
17:17 : Stop and go for De Rooy
The leader of the truck race, Gerard De Rooy, stopped for several minutes before setting off again. He should still be in the lead in the truck category on this stage, however.
16:35 Quads: Patronelli still at the front
Argentina's Marcos Patronelli has been the undisputed leader in the quad category from the start of the special. Sebastian Husseini trails by 9'31'. Lukasz Laskawiec shows he's back in shape with a provisional third place, 12'54' back.
16:32 : Sainz in trouble
After yesterday's electronic problems, Carlos Sainz's car seems to be giving him a hard time again. The Spaniard has been stopped near km 147 for twenty minutes now.
15:37 Quads: Patronelli again
Marcos Patronelli is again in the lead at CP1 after 173 km of the stage, with an intermediate time of 2:43’32', leading Sebastian Husseini by 8’19' and Lukasz Laskawiec by 9’20'. As for Gaston Gonzales, he is still experiencing mechanical problems on the special stage.
13:22 Quads: Gonzales loses time
Just before the 30-km point of the special, Gaston Gonzales (fifth in the quad general standings yesterday evening) seems to be in difficulty in the dunes. He has just emerged from a zone where several competitors are at a standstill, probably stuck in the stand. He has lost around half a dozen minutes.
12:45 Quads: The quads on their way to Arequipa
First to set out in the quad race this Tuesday, the winner of yesterday’s stage, Marcos Patronelli will be followed by his main rivals in the general standings, Sebastian Husseini and Rafal Sonik, with Gaston Gonzales and Ignacio Casale starting behind Lukasz Luskawiec.

19:29 Trucks: Loprais and De Rooy almost neck and neck in the general standings
Czech driver Ales Loprais (Tatra) took command of the Dakar truck category today on completion of the special stage between Nazca and Arequipa. However, there was nothing to really celebrate about, since the gap between Loprais and former leader Gérad De Rooy is small: only 56 seconds. Whilst the consistency of the Iveco trucks fell to pieces with Hans Stacey’s problems yesterday and Miki Biasion’s today, the Kamaz took advantage, as Nicolaev and Mardeev raised themselves respectively in to third and fourth, 7’08' and 18’00 behind the leader. The Tatra driven by Martin Kolomy completes the top 5 30’52' behind Loprais.
19:02 Trucks: Kamaz at the double in Arequipa!
On completion of this fourth stage, the Russian armada benefited from the problems of the general standings leaders. Ayrat Mardeev (RUS/Kamaz) won with a time of 4:04’59' whilst Andrey Karginov (RUS/Kamaz) came second 3’33' behind. The third place went to the Iveco driven by Hans Stacey, 6’22' behind the day’s winner. Fourth placed Eduard Nikolaev (RUS/Kamaz) trailed his team-mate by 10’51' at the finishing line. Yesterday’s leaders, Ales Loprais and Gérad De Rooy had less fortunate experiences and finished 18’28' and 26’23' respectively behind Mardeev.
17:32 Trucks: Mardeev takes advantage
At the 173-km point, Kamaz driver Ayrat Mardeev seems to be taking advantage of the problems those in front of him are experiencing, namely Miki Biansion, Gérard De Rooy and Eduard Nikolaev, who have all stopped during the special. Mardeev leads Hans Stacey (Iveco) by 6’13', Andrey Karginov (Kamaz) by 7’02' and Ales Loprais (Tatra) by 12’40'. Eduard Nikolaev and Gerard De Rooy are currently in fifth and sixth place.
17:17 : Stop and go for De Rooy
The leader of the truck race, Gerard De Rooy, stopped for several minutes before setting off again. He should still be in the lead in the truck category on this stage, however.
16:50 Trucks: A long stop for Nikolaev
The Russian at the wheel of the no. 501 Kamaz stopped for a long time, almost 15 minutes, 148.8 kilometres into today's special. He was leading the provisional classification at the first checkpoint (km 105), but now he's probably fallen behind Gerard de Rooy. We'll know for sure at km 173
16:32 : Sainz in trouble
After yesterday's electronic problems, Carlos Sainz's car seems to be giving him a hard time again. The Spaniard has been stopped near km 147 for twenty minutes now.
16:04 Trucks: Nikolaev leads after 105 km
The Russian Kamaz driver Eduard Nikolaev leads the truck special stage ahead of Gerard De Rooy after 105 km, with 6’56' separating the two men. The first time-check point, like for the other categories, is situated after 173 km (CP1).
15:47 Trucks: Biasion on the move again
The Iveco driver has set off again after having lost around twenty minutes in a zone on the special stage where a good number of competitors are at a standstill, probably stuck in the sand.
15:27 Trucks: Biasion at a standstill
For almost half an hour, the former world rally champion from Italy has been at a standstill after 46 km of the special stage. Yesterday, he was in third place in the general standings.
14:08 Trucks: Now for the heavies
The behemoths of the Dakar are beginning to start the special stage, with the Iveco Petronas driven by Gerard De Rooy at the forefront. He is currently the man to beat in the category, even if he only has a reasonable lead over the Tatra belonging to Ales Loprais. The Kamaz team’s Eduard Nikolaev, second yesterday, could again muscle in on the final places between De Rooy and his Italian team-mate Miki Biasion who will be starting third.
03:01 : RACE OFFICIALS’ DECISION
