16:09 : The Dakar 2012 reaches Lima's historical district
The first motorcycle competitors are heading towards Lima's historical district, where the final podium of the 2012 Dakar was set up on the Plaza de Armas for today's podium ceremony. The passionate crowd is waiting for the champions of the four categories. The first pilot on the podium will be Frenchman Cyril Despres, who beat his Spanish teammate Marc Coma and Portugal's Hélder Rodrigues. Next up will be Alejandro Patronelli, after a 'family rally' in which his brother Marcos (the 2010 Dakar champion) finished second, ahead of Tomás Maffei. Therefore, the Argentineans hog the quad podium. Then it will be the cars' turn. The Minis took a one-two, with Stéphane Peterhansel grabbing his tenth Dakar ahead of Nani Roma and South Africa's Giniel de Villiers (Toyota). Finally, all eyes will turn to the truck category, in which Team Iveco also got a one-two, with De Rooy and Stacey ahead of Kazakhstan's Artur Ardavichus and his Kamaz.
15:49 Trucks: Mardeev leads the trucks
Russia's Ilgizar Mardeev and his Kamaz lead the classification in the truck special, with a time of 28'48', ahead of Hans Stacey and his Iveco, 17' back, with Andrey Karginov a further 47' back. Artur Ardavichus lies fourth, ahead of overall winner Gerard De Rooy. Barring any last minute surprises, the Ivecos will dominate the truck general classification, with De Rooy ahead of Stacey. Artur Ardavichus (3rd) is Kamaz's best rider in the 2012 Dakar.
15:24 Cars: Gordon takes the last one
The American Robby Gordon clocked the best time in the last special of the 2012 Dakar, beating Mini's Ricardo Leal dos Santos and Krzysztof Holowczyc. All the GC leaders took things carefully in this special and were happy just to reach the finish and the podium in downtown Lima. Stéphane Peterhansel will climb onto the top step, flanked by his teammate Nani Roma and South Africa's Giniel de Villiers.
15:20 Quads: Maffei finishes with a flourish
The third-placed pilot in the quad overall classification, Tomás Maffei, posted the best time of his category in the last stage. He beat Sergio La Fuente and the Patronellis, with Alejandro ahead of Marcos. The brothers finished the 2012 edition of the Dakar in this same order after dominating almost the entire rally.
15:12 Bikes: Finish: Ullevalseter ahead of Coma
Norway's Pal Anders Ullevalseter has set the best time so far, with 22'26', ahead of Spain's Marc Coma, 1'08' back. Cyril Despres lies tenth, 3'51' down. Despres finished today's special 2'43' behind his main rival, wrapping up the 2012 Dakar in the motorcycle category.
15:10 Cars: The car leaders cross the finishing line
Stéphane Peterhansel was the first driver across the finishing line of the final special. The 2012 Dakar champion posted the third best time, 25'55', behind his teammate Nani Roma with 24'54' and the best time, set by Giniel de Villiers with 24'11'. The leaders of the car overall classification had an uneventful stage and all of them reached the finish without problems.
14:57 Bikes: Coma and Despres at the finish
The two leaders of the 2012 Dakar have completed the last special uneventfully. According to provisional and unofficial time checks, Marc Coma posted a time of 23'29', with Cyril Despres 2'37' behind. This means the French rider has won the rally.
14:44 Cars: The last stressful kilometres
Stéphane Peterhansel said yesterday that he will not breathe until the short final special is over. Although it may seem so, this special is anything but symbolic, and is still the last obstacle standing between the leader and a victory which seems to have his name on it. The no. 302 Mini has started the special, followed by its sister vehicle with Nani Roma at the wheel.
14:33 Bikes: Illanes, first rider out of the special
Chile's Rodrigo Illanes (no. 120) was the first rider to finish the motorcycle special. Alain Duclos has posted the best time so far: 28'44'.
14:31 Bikes: Coma and Despres are on their way
The last riders to start today's special, general classification leaders Marc Coma and Cyril Despres, have begun the 29-kilometre final stage. In contrast with the rest of the field, which has been starting in pairs since 7:30 am, the Top 10 will be racing alone.
14:12 Quads: The quad leaders start together
Together with Tomás Maffei, Alejandro and Marcos Patronelli started today's final 29-kilometre special within a space of thirty seconds. These three men have been the stars of the race in this category, among the 12 competitors who have made it to the start of the last stage. Let us not forget the courageous Ignacio Casale, Sergio La Fuente, Lucas Bonetto and Roverto Tonetti, who had their moments of glory in the different specials, as well as THE lady of the category, Camelia Lipatori, who should round off the Top 10 in Lima.
13:43 Bikes: A slight delay to the start
The motorcycles started today's 29-kilometre special at 7:30 am local time. The last riders in the overall classification will open the field in the last timed sector of the 2012 Dakar. On this occasion, competitors will start in pairs. The start of the stage was delayed by half an hour due to low clouds which reduced the visibility of safety teams in the air.
13:42 Bikes: Start leicht verschoben…
12:16 Cars: The cars leave Pisco
In contrast to the motorcycles, the cars will be led by the drivers at the top of the general classification on their liaison to the start of the special, 134 kilometres down the road. Stéphane Peterhansel leads the way followed by Nani Roma and Giniel de Villiers. This is done to ensure that the winners in the car and the motorcycle categories are together on the final podium in Peru's capital Lima at the end of today's short stage. 79 cars and 60 trucks are on the starting list for the last special.
11:13 Bikes: Countdown in the motorcycle category
The first motorcycle rider to set off this morning on the liaison to the start of today's special was not yesterday's winner Hélder Rodrigues, but the last one in the overall motorcycle classification. This is the traditional order for the finish in Lima of the last stage of the 2012 Dakar. Therefore, the classification leaders will be the last pilots to climb onto the podium. The first rider has set off on this stage, which begins with a 134-kilometre liaison to the start of today's short special (29 km) for the 98 motorcycles and 12 quads allowed to start on Sunday's stage.
