19:55 Trucks: De Azevedo second!
Brazil's André de Azevedo has earned a place on the podium of the penultimate stage after coming in second at the wheel of his Tatra, 20'14' behind leader Andrey Karginov.
19:53 Trucks: Finish: Karginov beats the Ivecos
The Russian driver's Kamaz was faster than the Iveco clan at the end of today's special. Indeed, he beat the fastest Iveco driver, Dutchman Hans Stacey, by no less than 22'09'. Miki Biasion came in third, 23'28' back, followed by Gerard de Rooy 25'23 back in fourth.
19:40 Trucks: Karginov's revenge?
After yesterday's impressive performance, which came to nothing due to a mistake on the final dunes, Andrey Karginov has been the first driver across the finishing line and may end up winning today's special. He posted a time of 3 h 33'27' for the 275-kilometre special. We are now awaiting the arrival of the Ivecos to see who was top dog on Saturday's stage.
19:24 Cars: Finish: Top 8
More and more drivers have reached the finish after Stéphane Peterhansel, giving a clearer view of the classification: Giniel de Villiers is still second 8'29' back, Leonid Novitskiy still sits third 12'55' back, followed by Carlos Souza in the provisional fourth place 13'39' back, Álvarez in fifth 14'57' back. Leal dos Santos lost 15'04' after helping Nani Roma. Behind him lies Nani Roma himself, who lost 22'57' on the dunes, and Robby Gordon, who got stuck in the sand, did a somersault and had a flat tyre, causing him to lose 36'01' in the penultimate special of the 2012 Dakar. In the general classification, status quo on the podium, with the gap between the leaders widening to 42'57', allowing De Villiers to get to within just over half an hour of Roma. Novitskiy climbs to fourth thanks to Gordon's mishaps.
18:58 Cars: Álvarez fourth
Argentina's Lucio Ezequiel Álverez (Toyota) has taken fourth place at the end of today's special, 14'57' behind leader Stéphane Peterhansel.
18:55 Cars: De Villiers crosses the finishing line first, Peterhansel takes the scratch
He was probably one of those who performed best in today's special, with the toughest part at the end. The South African and his Toyota crossed the finishing line first, but Stéphane Peterhansel has taken the provisional scratch with a time of 3 h 09'57', 8'29' ahead of Giniel de Villiers. The third driver across the line is also one of those who performed best on the dunes: Leonid Novitskiy's time was 12'55' slower than the overall leader's.
18:40 Quads: La Fuente on the podium
The Uruguayan quad driver Sergio La Fuente managed to get onto the podium of today's stage, finishing second in the classification, ahead of Alejandro Patronelli. He lost 7'04' to Tomás Maffei. Ignacio Casale finished just a few minutes ago, coming in fifth 29'41' back. Therefore, later arrivals may be able to do better than him.
18:20 Cars: Now it is Holowczyc's turn to get stuck
Now that Nani Roma has been able to continue the special, it is Pole Holowczyc's turn to get stuck on the same dunes. He is at km 182 and has been shown as immobile for 25 minutes already.
18:09 Cars: Gordon reaches rock bottom
After doing a somersault earlier on, the American continued the stage at low speed. He has now stopped at km 221 to repair a flat tyre
18:06 Trucks: CP1: Karginov ahead of the Ivecos
The driver at the wheel of Kamaz no. 509, Andrey Karginov, is trying to ward off yesterday's bad luck and confirming his great form in the final part of the 2012 Dakar, although it is true that the Ivecos are in a position to consolidate their grip on the overall classification. Karginov has just posted a time of 1 h 34'59' for the first 117 kilometres, ahead of Miki Biasion (+34'), Gerard De Rooy (+2'18') and Hans Stacey (+2'19').
17:54 Quads: Finish: Maffei beats the Patronellis
Tomás Maffei reached the finish of today's 275-kilometre special 8'16' ahead of Alejandro Patronelli, with the latter's brother Marcos a further 30' adrift. The two Argentinean brothers were in a position to take things carefully today and drove together during today's stage, following Marcos' problems in the first quarter of the special. Nevertheless, they still have a big margin in the general classification, with Alejandro ahead of Marcos. Maffei lies 2 h 15'39' behind the leader.
17:50 Cars: Gordon does a somersault!
202 kilometres into today's special, Robby Gordon was probably trying to claw back the time lost in the dune area 20 kilometres earlier when his car did a somersault. The crew emerged unscathed and are reported to be on their way to the finish.
17:44 Cars: Roma also loses time on the dunes
Nani Roma is currently losing time in the same dune area as Robby Gordon before, roughly 182 kilometres into the stage. Giniel de Villiers also got stuck in this area for a few minutes before being able to continue. The best driver across this area was Russia's Novitskiy. Stéphane Peterhansel, on the other hand, is driving slightly to the north and seems to have had no problems with the sand so far
17:19 Cars: The Hummer is moving again
Following his 7-minute stop at the start of the dune zone, 182 kilometres into today's special, Robby Gordon is on his way to the finish of special, roughly 90 km away.
17:10 Cars: Gordon on the dunes
The American driver stopped at the beginning of the dune area, 182 kilometres into today's special. He has lost almost 7 minutes so far and his GPS tracker still shows him as stopped.
16:54 Cars: CP1: Peterhansel second
France's Stéphane Peterhansel has lost a full 7'16' to the USA's Robby Gordon and his Hummer so far, but still came in second at the km 117 checkpoint, ahead of Nani Roma.
16:52 Cars: CP1: Gordon surges ahead
The American crossed CP1 with a total time of 1 h 12'28' for the first 117 kilometres. Giniel De Villiers was third, 8'41' back. These two drivers are battling it out for the bottom step of the overall podium, with the South African gaining the upper hand so far. Nani Roma posted the second best time, 7'30' behind the Hummer, while Leonid Novitskiy was fourth, 8'58' back.
16:50 Bikes: Finish: Coma 13'25' behind Rodrigues!
The Spaniard may have lost the 2012 Dakar on the dunes of today's special. He conceded 13'25' to stage winner Hélder Rodrigues, but most importantly 12'38' to Cyril Despres, who has taken a decisive advantage 24 hours before the end of the rally. Coma got lost near kilometre 207, which seems to be the main reason for his time loss. Cyril Despres will start tomorrow's very short (29 km) special with a 11'03' margin over his teammate. Hélder Rodrigues is still sitting third ahead of Jordi Viladoms, with approximately 30 minutes between them.
16:35 Bikes: Rodrigues takes the scratch
With a time of 3 h 21'16', Portugal's Hélder Rodrigues was faster than Despres by 47' at the finish of the thirteenth special.
16:33 Bikes: Finish: Despres posts the best provisional time
With a total time of 3 h 22'03', Cyril Despres has just signed the best time for today's 275-kilometre special, 2'13' ahead of Jordi Viladoms and 4'26' ahead of Joan Barreda Bort. Despres is now at the finish, obviously waiting for his GC rival Marc Coma, who has lost heaps of time in today's special.
16:24 Trucks: Pep Vila stuck on the dunes
20 kilometres into today's special, the Spanish trucker lies near Jo Adua. The Frenchman was able to cover a few more kilometres since his last stop but has since stopped again. The two trucks seem to be having a tough time with the dunes in the first part of the special.
16:10 Bikes: Km 232: Coma is losing it
After straying off course a while ago, Marc Coma may be living a very dramatic experience from a sporting point of view. His mistake is costing him dearly. After starting today's stage six minutes ahead of Cyril Despres, he passed kilometre 232 a full 6'52' down on the Frenchman, meaning he has lost a total of 12'52' to Despres. This unofficial time check is to be confirmed at the end of the special.
16:05 Trucks: Jo Adua stops after the start
The Iveco of the French driver, who is producing a great performance in the final part of the rally (fourth yesterday in Nasca and fifth in the overall classification), started the stage in the wake of his teammates, but has stopped at km 8 for approximately five minutes
16:01 Bikes: Coma gets lost!
207 kilometres into today's stage, Marc Coma went far, too far He now lies 2 kilometres as the crow flies from the course indicated in the road book. In the meantime, his main rivals are forging ahead The Spaniard is making his way back to the original course, but the field is now led by Jordi Viladoms and Joan Barreda.
15:33 Quads: CP1: Maffei takes advantage
Argentina's Tomás Maffei has taken advantage of the Patronelli brothers' stop. The picture is clearer after CP1: Maffei posted a time of 1 h 37'19', 4'15' ahead of Alejandro, with Marcos a further 9' back.
15:31 Bikes: Despres' lead shrinks
186 kilometres into the stage, at the entrance of the dunes near Santiago, Marc Coma has reduced the gap separating him from leader Despres. The last time their times were taken, the Frenchman was leading by 5'10'. His advantage has now shrunk to 2'14'
15:23 Cars: Gordon is on his way
Robby Gordon opened the car field this morning. The American started the 275-kilometre special right on schedule (9:10 am). He was followed by Leonid Novitskiy, Giniel De Villiers and Bernhard ten Brinke. Nani Roma and Stéphane Peterhansel started fifth and seventh.
15:19 Quads: The Patronellis have stopped for several minutes
99 kilometres into today's stage, the two Yamaha quads driven by the Patronelli brothers stopped at the same place. Marcos was leading the field this morning, so he probably had a technical problem and his brother stopped just afterwards to help him. They only stayed there for a few minutes before setting off again together.
15:06 Bikes: Barreda Bort strays away from the course!
The young Spaniard did not turn east at km 148 of today's special, as indicated in the road book. He later turned back on his track to get back on the course, losing a few precious minutes in the process. Neither Cyril Despres nor Marc Coma followed this wrong track but, as usual, its mere presence may lead other competitors to stray away from the course.
14:45 Bikes: CP1: Despres in the lead
Cyril Despres leads the way at CP1, with a time of 1 h 15'28' for the first 119 kilometres. He is followed by Joan Barreda Bort (+2'14'), Hélder Rodrigues (+3'15'), Paulo Gonçalves (+3'35') and Jordi Viladoms (+3'38'). Marc Coma is 5'10' back. Having started six minutes behind his main rival, the Frenchman is now riding close to the Spaniard.
14:14 : Km 95: Despres gains ground on Coma
95 km into the stage, Marc Coma has crossed an unofficial time check with a time of 7 h 41'19', with Cyril Despres posting a time of 7 h 38'59'. Taking into account that they started the special with a six-minute delay between them, this means Cyril Despres is gaining ground on the first rider to hit the course today (3'40' so far). To be confirmed at the checkpoint 30 km later
13:06 Bikes: Motorcycles: the race is on
Marc Coma leads the field – not always the easiest position. Cyril Despres starts fourth, in the wake of Spain's Barreda Bort and Viladoms. 275 kilometres to go The first references will come at km 120.
11:57 Bikes: The motorcycles are in the liaison section
Marc Coma, followed by Joan Barreda Bort, Jordi Viladoms and Cyril Despres. This is the head of the field for the liaison to the start of today's special, stretching from Nazca to Pisco, both in Peru. The 96-kilometre liaison will be the prologue to the 275-kilometre stage. 100 motorcycles and 12 quads were cleared to start this morning. Today's special could decide the final outcome of the 2012 Dakar in the motorcycle category.
