23:10 Trucks: Karginov comes roaring back to win!
In his struggle against the three Iveco trucks, Russian Alexey Karginov did not hold back on the last part of the special and beat his rivals on the finishing line! Over a special truck route, shorter than the one for the bikes, quads and cars, this Thursday he beat Hans Stacey by 3’03”, Miki Biasion by 5’02” and Gerard De Rooy by 6’32”. It would seem that De Rooy, in light of his lead of 55’58” in the general standings over his countryman Hans Stacey, has started to look after his lead. Artur Ardavichus finished the special 22’44” behind the day’s winner, but hangs on to third place in the general standings.
22:47 Cars: Sousa loses a lot of time
The crew of Carlos Sousa and Jean-Pierre Garcin driving the Great Wall prepared by Philippe Gache’s SMG team is one of the major losers of the day. He finished 1:36’50” behind the leader and gives up the sixth place he was occupying in the general standings to Lucio Ezequiel Alvarez (Toyota). The Portuguese driver is also under threat from the Mitsubishi driven by Bernhar Ten Brinke as well as the Mini driven by Ricardo Leal Dos Santos.
22:36 Cars: Gordon finally finishes
American Robby Gordon has just crossed the finishing line with a final time of 5:47’33”. He finishes the special 1:50’40” behind the day’s quickest time, achieved by Frenchman Stephane Peterhansel, his former rival in the general standings, where he is now 2:10’31” behind in fourth place. Technical problems at the end of zone 1 and a long stop (perhaps to try and repair) during the neutralised section are the main reasons for this loss of time.
22:27 Trucks: Karginov moves amongst the Ivecos at CP3
The three Iveco crews are still dominating the special at CP3, but in the absence of Artur Ardavichus, another Kamaz truck is attempting to throw a spanner in the works of Team De Rooy. With a total time of 2:58’37”, Ducthman Hans Stacey is leading the way, ahead of Italian Miki Biasion who trails Stacey by 2’54”. Behind them, Andrey Karginov trails by 4’09”, in front of Gerard De Rooy who is only 22” behind the Russian.
21:07 Cars: Leal Dos Santos finishes third!
The Minis have scored a hat-trick on conclusion of the 11th stage, because behind Stephane Peterhansel and Nani Roma Portugal’s Ricardo Leal Dos Santos has climbed on to the last step of the day’s podium, finishing 8’56” behind the day’s winner but ahead of Giniel De Villiers (9’28” behind “Peter”) and Leonid Novitskiy (10’15” behind the Frenchman).
20:45 Cars: Peterhansel wins the stage!
After 3:56’53” of a battle against the terrain, Stephane Peterhansel has won the special stage with a lead of 3’44” over the man who is now his main pursuer in the general stangings, 22’49” behind the Frenchman. South African Giniel de Villiers 9’28” behind finishes in provisional third place, awaiting the arrival of Ricardoi Leal Dos Santos. What has become of Robby Gordon, however? The American started this section of the special very late and will suffer a major loss of time in the general standings.
20:26 Cars: Fight for third place at CP3
Almost 7 minutes behind leader Stephane Peterhansel, Ricardo Leal Dos Santos has once again achieved the third best intermediate time in the provisional standings, 6’48” behind the Frenchman. In fourth position, Giniel De Villiers is only 1’30” behind the Mini meaning a possible podium finish at the end of the day is within his reach. The currently fifth-placed driver is Leonid Novitskiy, 10’33” the day’s quickest driver. Bernar Ten Brinkle is in sixth, 17’39” behind the stage leader.
19:50 Quads: The Patronellis way out alone at the finishing line
In 4:53’45” the day’s distance has been gobbled up by Alejandro Patronelli, picking up another special stage victory in front of his brother Marcos, who finished 31” behind. The gap between the two men leading the general standings has stabilised at 1:20’00”. Third-placed rider Tomas Maffei finished 18’57” behind on completion of the special and trails by 1:55’43” in the general standings.
19:45 Cars: Peterhansel and Roma still dominating at CP3
With a time of 3:08’22” Stephane Peterhansel has just passed through CP 3 with a lead in the provisional standings of 1’52” over Nani Roma. They have 70 kilometres left to race before the finishing line. At present, Robby Gordon has not yet entered zone 2 of this special stage and is on the neutralised section 30 kilometres from the start.
19:28 Bikes: The Top 5 at the finishing line
The first 25 competitors have now crossed the finishing line of the special stage and it can be confirmed that Cyril Despres is the day’s winner, 1’39” ahead of Gerard Farres Guell, author of a first class performance today, just like Frenchman Johnny Aubert (3’30” behind) who finished fourth behind Marc Coma (2’01” behind Despres). In fifth place, Joan Barreda Bort finished 4’53” behind the day’s winner. In the general standings, Despres lead over Coma has grown to 2’22” this afternoon, whilst the eighth-placed finisher today, Helder Rodrigues, is third in the general standings, 1:08’40” behind Despres.
19:00 Trucks: 1-2-3 for Iveco at the end of zone 1
With Hans Stacey ahead of Miki Biasion and Gerard De Rooy, Iveco have dominated the first zone of the special stage, which has a slightly different route for the trucks. Stacey leads his team leader by 6’32” and the two times world rally champion by 4’46”. Artur Ardavichus is fourteenth for the moment, 15’04” behind.
18:55 Cars: The Minis get to grips with zone 2
Nani Roma and Stephane Peterhansel have begun zone é of the special stage followed by Giniel de Villiers. Currently, Robby Gordon is only at the 222-km point on the link route, 100 kilometres from the start of the second zone.
18:48 Cars: Gordon back on the road
The American restarted along the link route several minutes ago. He now has to reach the start of the second zone, which is located approximately 130 kilometres away.
18:46 Quads: A duel between Patronellis at CP2
The Argentinean brothers are again dominating the quad category and are enjoying a fine battle in the last several kilometres of the day’s special stage. Alejandro only leads Marcos by 31” after 394 km. Tomas Maffei is still in third place, 4’34” behind the first-placed rider.
18:30 Cars: Gordon still at a standstill
The signal emitted by Robby Gordon’s Hummer has been pinpointed again at the 199-km point on the day’s stage, the same place at which he stopped more than 1 hour forty minutes ago. The American is still at a halt at this point, whereas Roma and Peterhansel are poised to reach the start of zone 2.
18:27 Bikes: Despres gains two extra minutes over Coma
At the finishing line of the special on the eleventh day of the Dakar 2012, the duel between the official KTM riders has still not reached a conclusion. Cyril Despres holds the initiative after gaining 2’01” over Marc Coma and is still out in front in the general standings with a lead of 2’22” over the Spaniard. Joan Bart Borreda is in provisional third place, 4’53” behind the provisional winner, those these standings may change in the minutes ahead as other riders arrive at the finishing line.
18:22 Cars: Problems for Gordon?
At the end of the first zone of the special, the car category competitors all headed via the link route to the start of the second zone, except Robby Gordon who stopped in a hamlet after 199 km of the route, near to the town of Moquega. His GPS has not emitted a signal since 10.46 AM local time. Is the American trying to solve a technical problem that slowed him down towards the end of the first zone? Whatever the case, the start time for the second zone is approaching and unless he has forgotten to restart his Iritrack system, he is still 140 km away from the zone 2 starting point
17:55 Bikes: Zanol in sixth
Brazilian Felipe Zanol, who was in third place in the previous intermediate standings, is now in sixth place, behind Jordi Viladoms and trailing the leader by 4’14”. Three seconds behind him, Joan Barreda Bort lies in seventh ahead of Ullevalseter, Rodrigues, Verhoeven and Svitko, with less than four minutes separating these riders.
17:43 Bikes: Surprising standings at CP2 again
Like in the first zone, the intermediate standings at CP2 have given pride of place to some outsiders who have dealt admirably with the partition of this special: Gerard Farres Guell is currently second, 9” behind Cyril Despres and Johnny Aubert is third 1’11” behind. The two men have confirmed the good performances displayed in the previous zone. All that is missing is Felipe Zanol who also shone at the previous time points. Watch this space…
17:23 Bikes: Despres leads Coma at CP2
In the combat between the two men since the beginning of the Dakar 2012, at present the initiative is with Cyril Despres, who has a slight lead of 1’48” over Marc Coma at CP2. The third placed rider has lost ground on the leader: Joan Barreda Bort trails the Frenchman by 4’19”.
16:55 Cars: Leal Dos Santos in third
Ricardo Leal Dos Santos has confirmed his third place on leaving the first timed section. He was fourth at CP1 behind Robby Gordon and has therefore moved up a place over the last part, due to the American slowing. He is 5’15” behind the current leader of the day, Frenchman Stephane Peterhansel.
16:52 Trucks: Ardavichus opens the way
The Kamaz driver Artur Ardavichus has started the special and is opening the way for the 61 trucks still in the race today. He will have to resist the attacks of the Iveco machines who will start behind Andrey Karginov, the second driver to start in this specific timed section for the trucks, which follows the route of the other categories, except for a loop measuring slightly more than 40 kilometres, after the first two thirds.
16:49 Cars: The Minis lead Gordon at zone 1 finish
Stephane Peterhansel leads his team-mate Nani Roma by 1’59” on completion of the first zone of the special stage with a time of 2:17’15” over the 194 kilometres covered. After having dominated the first part of the timed section, American Robby Gordon has slowed down and lost 6’02” to the Frenchman. Giniel de Villiers is fourth, 7’14” behind.
16:46 Cars: Sousa in the dunes
Carlos Sousa has been at a standstill for approximately 30 minutes after 117 kilometres of the special stage in a zone of dunes where he seems to have got stuck in the sand. The Portuguese driver has been in a respectable eighth place in the general standings at the wheel of his Great Wall prepared by Team SMG, until this incident.
16:12 Cars: Novitskiy moves in behind Leal Dos Santos
Russian Leonid Novitskiy has provisionally taken place behind Ricardo Leal Dos Santos in fifth place, ahead of Giniel de Villiers. He trails the day’s leader by 8’04'. Bernhar Ten Brinke in his Mitsubishi is currently seventh, 16’42” behind Gordon.
16:10 Quads: Bonetto and Casale complete the Top 5 at zone 1 finish
Behind Alejandro and Marcos Patronelli followed by Tomas Maffei, young quad rider Lucas Bonetto has achieved the fourth best place ahead of Ignacio Casale. Bonetto is 20’34” behind the day’s leader and Casale trails by 43’57”. These positions could change however as other quads arrive
16:02 Cars: Leal Dos Santos unseats De Villiers at CP1
Portugal’s Ricardo Leal Dos Santos has just reached CP1 and has achieved the fourth best time of the day, 6’08” behind the stage leader.
16:00 Cars: De Villiers fourth at CP1
South African Giniel de Villiers is currently just outside the provisional Top 3, made up by Gordon, Peterhansel and Roma. Behind the wheel of his Toyota Hilux, the former winner of the Dakar has lost no less than 8’10” to Robby Gordon over the first 145 kilometres.
15:50 Cars: Gordon leads
American Robby Gordon has just reached the intermediate time point two thirds of the way into the first timed section for the cars. At the wheel of his Hummer, he boasts a total time of 1:31’37” and a lead of 2’52” over the first Mini driver. Stephane Peterhansel leads his team-mate at CP1 after a little less than 145 kilometres, with the Frenchman currently 1’28” in front of Spaniard Nani Roma.
15:38 Quads: Leading trio again in front at zone 1 finish
Patronelli, Patronelli and Maffei are still in front at the end of the first timed zone measuring 194 kilometres. Alejandro leads Marcos by 54”. Tomas Maffei is in third, 2’59” behind the leader.
14:52 Quads: The leaders in front at CP1
The three men who have been commanding the category for several stages are again ahead over the first part of the stage. With a time of 1:57’53”, Alejandro Patronelli has been quickest, 13 seconds in front of his brother Marcos. Tomas Maffei has lost the most time after a small navigation mistake at the start of the special stage and is now third, 2’59” behind the day’s leader. Ignacio Casale is fourth, almost 18 minutes behind the day’s quickest quad.
14:44 Bikes: Farres Guell on top at zone 1 finish
Spaniard Gerard Farres Guell is in fact the quickest rider over the first part of the special, 47” ahead of Frenchman Johnny Aubert. Cyril Despres is in third place, 1’15” behind and Brazilian Zanol is fourth, 2’50” behind. For the moment, Cyril Despres has a lead of 1’47” in the general standings. The competitors are now heading along the 131 kilometre link stage before tackling the second timed section.
14:22 Bikes: Despres leads at zone 1 finish… for the moment
Similarly to CP1, Cyril Despres has achieved the best time in this zone. Over the first 194 kilometres, he boasts a time of 2:25’51” leading his team-mate Marc Coma by 1’47”. 4’17' behind the provisional leader lies the Husqvarna of Joan Bareda Bort.
14:19 Cars: Nani Roma starts the special
Spaniard Nani Roma, yesterday’s stage winner, has started the first timed section of the day’s special, followed by his team-mate Stephane Peterhansel, then Giniel De Villiers and Robby Gordon. Almost 195 kilometres of timed section make up the first part of this eleventh day of competition on the Dakar 2012.
14:04 Bikes: A new trio leads the bikes
Spanish rider Gerard Farres Guell, Frenchman Johnny Aubert and Brazilian Felipe Zanol lead all the rest now that the first 13 bikes have reached CP1 after 144 kilometres of the day’s special. They have beaten the previous best time achieved by Cyril Despres. Farres Guell has a total time of 1:39’59”, leading Aubert by 1’01” and Zanol by 2’00”. Despres is currently 2’21” behind the new leader.
13:49 Bikes: Despres in the lead at CP1
Now that the first bikes have reached CP1, Frenchman Cyril Despres is the provisional leader with a total time of 1:42’20” and a lead of 11” over Norwegian rider Ullevalseter. The rider from France boasts a lead of 1’01' over Spaniard Jordi Viladoms in third, whilst Marc Coma is fourth, 1’46” behind Despres. Stefan Svitko is in fifth place, 46” behind Coma. Portugal’s Helder Rodrigues trails the leader by 4’18” and Joan Barreda Bort is 4’33” behind the day’s quickest time.
13:38 Bikes: Olivier Pain in the dunes
French biker Olivier Pain has slowed in the dunes after 118 kilometres several minutes ago. The Frenchman, who has ridden a very fine Dakar 2012 so far and currently occupies eighth place in the bike category general standings, stopped for several minutes before resuming the race in the wake of Spaniard Gerard Farres Guell who started five places behind him.
13:04 Bikes: Faria gets going again
The Portuguese rider has resumed the route of the day’s special shortly after 6.47 AM local time, having been at a standstill at the 20-km point of the special stage for approximately 35 minutes.
13:01 Cars: The cars on the road to the special
Starting from Arica towards the day’s special, Nani Roma set off to open the road several minutes ago followed by Stephane Peterhansel and Giniel de Villiers. The cars will be followed a little later by the trucks. 101 cars have been authorised to start and 63 trucks are still in the race this morning, although these figures do not include any non-starters today.
12:48 Bikes: The Patronellis lose their bearings
After around 20 kilometres again, Marcos Patronelli followed the tracks of the other bikes that took the wrong direction. His brother Alejandro also made the same mistake, but both managed to find their way back onto the correct route. In the meantime, Tomas Maffei has also returned to the right tracks. Several bikes are at a standstill in this area. Since it is the bed of a river, it is quite likely that some competitors have got stuck in the mud or flooded their engines, including Ruben Faria who is still currently at a standstill.
12:35 Bikes: Faria on the wrong track
Portugal’s Ruben Faria has also taken the wrong direction, this time a little more than 20 kilometres after the start of the special. Faria headed north east instead of following the planned route to the west. He has been at a standstill since 6.22 AM local time. Several other competitors seem to have also made the same mistake in the same place, including Argentinean quad rider Tomas Maffei.
12:32 Bikes: The leaders get briefly lost
After 40 kilometres, the leaders’ GPS systems have revealed a small joint navigation mistake. Joan Barreda Bort, Marc Coma and Cyril Despres virtually all fell into the same trap, but only for a short while, with Coma the going the furthest on the wrong track. All three of them quickly turned back and returned to the right track. An accurate view of any consequences this episode may have hand on the standings will be possible in approximately 80 kilometres, when they reach the first intermediate time point.
11:48 Bikes: The bikes start the special
The bikers have started the first of the two zones on the day’s special stage. Ahead of them lies a little less than 195 kilometres of earth, stones and sand as they hit a section of dunes at around the midway point. Afterwards, a link route will lead them to the second timed section. At the rear of the motorbike pack, there will be the 16 quads left on the list of starters.
10:10 Bikes: The bikes head to Arequipa
Joan Barreda Bort and Marc Coma have left the bivouac together on time this morning. The day’s opener, the younger of the two Spaniards, set off at 4 o’clock in the morning (Peruvian local time). 109 bikes have been authorised to start this Thursday. The route on this 11th stage of the Dakar 2012 has been altered due to the heavy rainfall in the region over the last few days. The dried river beds are no longer dry So, the bikes will mainly be following the same route as the cars today, instead of the specific separate planned route. They will then head to their own bivouac via the link stage, because this evening, the bikers and quad riders will be camping apart from the four-wheelers, on the Pacific Coast in Camana, without their assistance teams.
